An image purporting to show Osama bin Laden's bloody corpse, right, is a composite of two separate images, left and centre.

An image apparently showing a dead Osama bin Laden broadcast on Pakistani television and picked up by British newspaper websites is a fake.

The bloodied image of a man with matted hair and a blank, half-opened eye has been circulating on the internet for the past two years. It was used on the front pages of the Mail, Times, Telegraph, Sun and Mirror websites, though swiftly removed after the fake was exposed on Twitter.

It appears the fake picture was initially published by the Middle East online newspaper themedialine.org on 29 April 2009, with a warning from the editor that it was "unable to ascertain whether the photo is genuine or not".

The Daily Mail was one of the newspaper websites to publish the fake picture of Osama bin Laden's body.
Since then, however, the image has been claimed as genuine on a number of conspiracy forums and used to substantiate claims that the terrorist responsible for the 9/11 bombings had been killed.

The Guardian was one of the few sites to hold back from using the manipulated image on its front page, reporting the picture's existence in its live blog but questioning its legitimacy.

The image is based on a genuine photograph of Bin Laden taken in 1998 and used by the Reuters news agency.

On Twitter, a composite including the other photograph used to make the image was posted by @HannahMarbina and other users showed how easy it was to find the image already online with a simple search.

Heard they buried him at sea, that they had to do it within 24 hours, wrapping his body in white cloth as per Islamic custom...

Forgive my ignorance but I don't understand why it's an Islamic tradition to be buried at sea when most muslim states are pretty much desert and/or land-locked.

THERE MUST BE PHOTO EVIDENCE.
Its common place to photo every dead insurgent of importance, mainliy to prove to the arabs that the feared person ois dead... this is very important in the middle east as most rulers are never ever seen by the common man and in theory could rule for many years even after death! Remember Saddams sons? their pics including head shots where in the papers days later.

Early reports claim he was killed "after a firefight" not "during" and that he was "asked to surrender". BULLSHIT, hes been executed along with his son, wife and any witness's... but such is life. Just dont lie about is Obama.

Later reports this afternoon started saying hes been killed by two head shots, why wasnt this in early reports? Was it the usa thinking on its feet after the outcry for photo evidence? They cant show someone with half a face can they.

2 they killed him but they didn't photograph the body.
3 they killed him but they didn't bury him at sea.

The longer it takes the photo to arrive also indicates it OR a person is being doctured to look like OBL.

Another theory, OBL was killed ages ago, maybe at Tora Bora but that his body was destoryed... thus the endless war on terror begins with him at the helm (apprently). the yanks get fucked off cos they cant kill a ghost EVER so they cant see if that will effect things.
