Uni loans Since this place seems to be reeking with financial intillect could anyone advise me here? I'm goint to uni next year but I know that you can only get a certain amount, dependant on the income the house you live in "at home". If I was to say that I am living with my grandma (or even do live with her short term) would I be able to get a larger amount? And if so, is it worth doing? I will be getting a part time job to cover more living expenses while I'm there but I want some money to buy some new equipment and/or some production software. Any advice? I have heard about grants/scholarships and such, so any advice there would be appreciated. Cheers
why would you want to fiddle it to get more you still pay it back why dont you get what your entitled to and work to make a regualr income ???
It's not worth the risk for the sake of a few hundred pound which you have to pay back anyway, and probably waste like most students do
Like I said, I want to buy some new equipment, and like you said, I will be paying it back so it's not really fiddle........
I have a job, but I spend it as soon as I get it I hate it but cant help it. Maybe on full time wages I could but not that I'm back at school.
] think you shouldnt bother then if your rubbish with money you will need to change your habits first
I would definitely recommend working to supplement your income - i find it a struggle and I am working 2 jobs + what ever i get in loans / bursarys
Re: Uni loans ull get shit loads mate, especially if you apply for a grant! you dont have to pay the grant back and you can get around 3 grands worth i think. then u can get around 4 grand loan. you can get the loan without giving ant financial details which entitles you to 75% of the full loan. everyone is able to get course fee's, no matter what. but ull probably come out with around 1800 a term, mayb more, and pay only half of that back! if your living at home, ull have no problem. if you move away about 15-20 hours will be the amount you want to work, try and get a fone job. more sociable hours and better money. what and where you studying?
how old are you? it will depend on you income and the household income - will probably get your fees waivered however i wouldnt recommend it as you gran will need to provide lots of information. it might be stressful to you gran to keep receiving letters and everything, and they will probably want to know whats happened to you parents... and the increased fee isnt that increased
Do you have a family olf 6 to feed, crippled parents to house and a fleet of cars to run? Cos otherwise I can't believe you're struggling on two jobs and a loan.
Struggling Actually Im finding it harder dropping from X amount i used to get on a weekly basis to what im on now
You get less when you live at home because you don't need as much (don't have to pay rent etc). I think that equates to approx £3,100 per year. Loads of unis do grants and bursaries so it's worth shopping around to see what you can get (they have to do this in order to be able to charge £3,000 tuition fees). There's a bursaries calculator on one of the uni websites somewhere, it might be UCAS but I can't really remember. Some uni's (e.g. Teeside) will give you a grand just for going there!
Just get whatever loan they offer you, then top it up at the start of term with a hardship grant. A grand for free!
Youre better off taking the biggest loan you can, investing it in a high interest savings account which your bank will sort out for you. The interest rate on a student loan is less than the interest on a savings account so you can actually make money off your loan, providing you dont feel the temptation to blow it
do it, all you are doing is bending the truth a little. My parents are divorced so i put my dad down as the main contact as he doesnt earn as much as my mam. My fees get paid and i get the highest level of loan. I live at home and this year my loan is £4600 including a £1000 grant, and my fees dont come out of this.
Cheers people! I'm looking at Manchester, but as I say it's not until next year so I'm not too worried about looking at the moment. I'm doing marketing and advertising Im 18, so I'll be 19 when I go, and cheers
Seeing as I work in this area everyday pretty much at Newcastle Students Union, I'll give you an explanation. Basically the Student loans company do income assessed loans which will rely on the amount the main earners you live with bring in. The maximum you can get on this is just over 4 grand. All students are now entitled to a tuition fee loan as well which will cover the amount sepnt over the course of your degess on fees alone in addition to the regular loan. Alongsied this you can also get a bursary from your University (usually) to help you with costs. Oh yeah and you can apply for a grant which is a non repayable part of your laon, however this no longer adds onto the loan it just removes some of the money you'd have to pay back in the future. I hope this helps? If you have any questions then give me a PM as I sit on our Univeristy atudent financial discrepancy forum every wednesday so i see a variety of cases so can advise on your situation.
