The Great Laptop Ordeal Part 2

Right ok, i've decided to go for (but havent bought yet) The Dell XPS M1530, just the basic version - which will be around £589, which is including delivery. The spec is as follows:

    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T5750 (2.00 GHz, 667 MHz FSB, 2 MB L2 cache)

    2048MB 667MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM [2x1024]

    Vista Home Premium (urgh)

    Biometric Fingerprint Reader

NVIDIA® GeForce™ Go 8400M GS with 128MB dedicated graphic memory

    15.4" Widescreen™ WXGA (1280x800) TFT Display (220nits) with TrueLife™

    160GB (5400RPM) SATA Hard Drive

Fixed 8x DVD+/-RW Slim Slot Load drive, including SW

    Intel® Next-Gen Wireless-N Mini-Card - Europe - Core 2 Duo Processors.

Right, can anyone think of any better deal, or ANY criticism of this kind of machine? or even if it's a total rip off for the price?

because i've heard nothing but good things about dell laptops so far.

    Cheers in Advance people :)

The majority of peple I know who have Dell laptops have had to send them back atleast once.

get an HP, mine still works perfectly 2.5 years later. Been dropped, taken into a smokey nightclubs, had a 28,000 word disertations written on it etc etc. The only thing wrong with it is the space bar is broken but thats to be expected considering how much use its had.

I was in your posistion bout 6 months ago....

Disagree completely with Phil on this one. Use an xps 5130 myself - slightly different spec to this one (mainly in the processor) and its been spot on.

Use it heavily for running trakor/cubase and the like.

Never showed any sign of packing in. Got a bunch of friends who all bought dell laptops when they started their design courses 4 years ago not had a single problem with them.

    get it bought

    yeah cheers,

looks like i'll be getting this ordered next week - and yeah, that fingerprint reader's apparently a standard on most new laptops these days. apparently you can control all your passwords for the internet (banking, email, forums etc). bit mission impossible but seems to be a good idea :)

    @ Quick:

I dont plan to drop it anyway mate, and since the smoking ban's in force i doubt anywhere will be anywhere remotely smokey ;)

nah, i'll be getting it from dell - through my stepdad's work account, so delivery will be free and no doubt immediate.

is vista really that bad? i'm getting the 2gig Ram package with the machine but i thought that would have been more than enough just to run the operating system alone! i think i'm sticking on XP as a second OS, but was nearing more to the sole-vista option, until people started warning me about Traktor and Ableton's stability on Vista.

basically i'll be using it for

    Photoshop CS3
    Illustrator CS3
    Traktor
Ableton (well, i think i'm just kidding myself there)
    Itunes
Word (any version but 2007 or XP)

will this system + Vista suffice?

and as an endnote - apparently if that finger zapper business fucks, it asks for a manual password. hopefully i wont end up getting my finger cut off by crazed robbers looking for access to my gear

sounds like a right nightmare, i'll definately be using XP as a second OS like, i've heard nothing but good things for it's runnings of photoshop and illustrator, so i'll use XP for all the music business etc, and vista for everything else.

dell have given me the option of a cut price upgrade on this business account too - so it looks like i'll be running 3gig of RAM with a Core 2 2.2Ghz CPU - an extra 0.2 worths of processing power and an extra gig of ram for 60 quid extra - seems good to me.

    although i dont really understand the monitor differences. can anyone tell me the difference of this kinds of monitors?;

    15.4" Widescreen™ WXGA (1280x800) TFT Display (220nits) with TrueLife

15.4" Widescreen WXGA+ (1440x900) TFT Display with TrueLife

15.4" Widescreen WUXGA (1920x1200) TFT Display with TrueLife

i know the resolutions are different, but is there any massive difference with them?

i'm only making a fuss because i know i'll be stuck with my choice and i want to make the informed one :)

    i just tidied it up!
and added a bit of colour:oops:

1900x1200 on a 15 will make everything too small i think, the res will be too high for the screen
