True... but how much would it cost to buy some Cisco books, and do some training courses or CISCO/MSCE bootcamps while working part/full time at a local company for experience..... versus 3-4 years at university doing "Introduction to Photoshop 1.0" or "Artificial Intelligence in COBOL"....

I dont doubt that theres some courses and modules across the degree spectrum that are relevant to alot of people... but i'd like to bet the majority are an absolute waste of time.

The majority of people who are at Sunderland Uni are there because they got rejected by Northumbria. ;)

well ive always thought it seemed a waste of time, the years spent in the education could probably be spent better in a low payed placement with promotion prospects.

    Thats bollocks.

The entry requirements are basically the same.

Sunderland school of Computing and Technology kicks the arse of the Northumbria equivalent.

To be fair. People who go to Northumbria are Newcastle rejects. Thats a fairer comparison.

I could have went to Newcastle with the grades I got, and got into Northumbria but rejected it.

Sunderland is not for Northumbria rejects.

If you get rejected from Northumbria, you really need to have a long word with yourself in all fairness

yeh, its old now though. Not saying its shit but its not as good.

Sunderland has won several awards! I went to open days at both, the facilities are much better at sunderland.

Sunderland is also one of the only Universities in the north that is both a Microsoft Regional Centre and a Cisco Academy Centre.

    Northumbria has neither.....

Exactly why I went to Sunderland - Needs.

Not a fair comparison on the whole but just saying it to challenge Orbit, and there is a great deal of Truth in it.

Maybe everyone should have to do two years in industry before they decide if or what they want to study.

Might help a few people make a more informed choice.

    check you!!

reputation of your uni has more to do with the worth of your degree + to be fair sunderland doesnt even have one... there where rumours that it was gonna be stripped of its university status too...

    unlucky!

anyone who turned down newcastle or northumbria for sunderland needs their head checking

fyi northumbria came above a lot of red brick unis and only one place below newcastle in the last broadsheet tables i saw - 2002 i think... (29/92)

The interesting thing here is alot of people defending universities do so because of the social scene, or the life changing aspects of moving out and starting to move closer into the big bad world... its funny how the actual relevance of what they are supposed to be teaching you, or the point of the whole experience means very little to most of you/us...

... when the tories were in power and the university system was an opportunity for the more academic people in britain to "live the dream" for a few years - i think university was a good thing, and in alot of countries this is still the case. At the end of the day i dont think its a bad thing that the government subsidise you to the tune of 10 grand or whatever the real cost was of giving you a grant and paying your fee's etc etc...

.. The next few years will be interesting to see how many poor idiots sign themselves up to a mountain of debt and top up fee's in the pursuit of "higher education"...

    Nail on head.

Other than the above, I think further education is somewhat a waste of time, which is why I left college last year.

My best friend got terrible GCSE results, his highest grade was a D. He then went to college for a year and did nothing there either. For lack of anything else to do, he applied for an Electrician's Apprenticeship with Gateshead council, but failed the 'exam'. He was then offered a post as a plumber, and now, 2 years into an apprenticeship, makes a hell of a lot more than me, and I went to college for two years!

Although saying all this, I'm returning to study in September :dunce:

    i need my degree!
my degree is in the acemdic sector......im doing a ba(hons) with qts in primary education.
to become a teacher, i have to have a degree...therefore its not a waste of time :)
however, i totally understand with what u lot are saying about experience vs degree type thing.
imho.....go to uni, i'm having the time of my life.....;)
even if ur degree is so called 'worthless' surley the fun, skills and everything else that uni brings is enough to carry on doing ur degree
what im trying to say is that, shouldn't we all be at uni, having fun, travelling etc while we can, instead of being stuck in a 9-5 job when ur 18...if we get it all out of our system now, then we'll be ready to go nd start work in our 23/4's, wont we??
i dont nd never will think degrees are pointless.....surley tho, if u've picked ur degree, it must be something you enjoy, right??.....which imo means that money shouldnt be such a big factor ur all making it out to be. As i said, im doing teaching nd i adore it, im not in it for the money, not that teachers get that much now anyway, im in it for the rewards. thin about it ppl.

I was @ uni for a year, it sucked. So i left. The social life was the best tho, ive made friends for life.

Since i left ive been working in the same sorta job area, earning a living, with good hours n loadsa time off & no debt (well just a little!). Ive been gaining qualifications thru work n im far better off than me mates who've just graduated.

Its a shame, they cant get jobs thru lack of experience. I must admit that for certain areas of work i reccon work based learning is the way forward.:)

have to agree with ya in some respects there like chute!...thats why the curriculum's changing in a few years time...pupils get to learn at school, as well as go out on training, learning 'handson' skills, which now employers want.
the only down fall imo tho, is that at 14/5 u still mite not be sure of what u wanna do, plus those who do want to become teachers, lawyers etc..are not gonna gain an nvq from there training, unfair??
    xx:p

Yeah, it would sorta put people who dunno what they wanna do in an awkward situation. And on the job training scheme aint gunna work for all jobs/professions. Need a mix of both the old and new system methinks! :king: ;)

if it's pointless why are more than half of my course taking a year out from working (they're all 30+, with good jobs) to get a degree?
