Done a bit of wonk digging & found this: I:cube is a Parisian dance music producer whose peers include Laurent Garnier, Air, Kojak, and Cassius. Like his contemporaries, I:cube produces funky house and down-tempo grooves, fusing disco, jazz and electro, first sampled on his 1995 single "Disco Cubizm". Although the sound is similarly slick and dancefloor-friendly, I:cube manages to make room for experimentation. This is demonstrated by his 1999 debut album's highlight "Dans La Pièce Vide", which moves away from the dancefloor towards more abstract, dub-inspired territory. This influence is confirmed by the track "Le Dub". I:cube's confident debut, an imaginative, quirky take on the chic Parisian club sound was described by the UK's Muzik magazine as "wonk-house". does this revelation mean pgr are not the pioneers of the wonk they have claimed, but in fact just copy cats?
It's like anything, a small number of pioneers start a shift in the dance music scene, these things can never be down solely to one person, as we already said 'wonk' has many influences and has influenced many. It's only now that it has been given a badge to wear... We were among the first to champion the wonk sound
