Mixmag Dance Mag Duds If you want to know what Ibiza's really like, don't read Mixmag. Perhaps it's the falling sales, but the once persuasive UK-based dance mags have got one foot in their mouth and one in the grave. We say break out the euthanasia syringes, because if their latest issues are anything to go by they ought to be put down like mangy dogs. Mixmag might be the biggest seller at 50,000 a month, but their latest issue is perhaps their most misguided yet. The following is a quote from the editorial in the July issue: "Here at Mixmag, we all love Ibiza. It's our spiritual home. Paradise. So that's why this issue we have to reveal the truth about the underworld threatening to kill it." As anybody who lives here knows, this is patently bullshit. Gavin Herlihy, p. 38: "Ibiza has become a pressure cooker, waiting to explode." More bullshit. The streets of Ibiza (outside of San An perhaps) are safe. The roads of Ibiza are another story, but to say that the club scene in Ibiza is being held to ransom by gangs is just not true. Why the pic of the gun? Apart from on cops I've never seen one in Ibiza in 5 years, let alone found out about anybody being shot or even threatened. I've only heard of one incident involving a knife in any of the clubs - not bad for millions of people over five years. The police in Ibiza are very community based. They read the websites and the magazines and know what's going on everywhere. The authorities should be congratulated for getting their priorities straight and playing their part in what has justifiably held onto its rep as the best scene in the world. Jo Love's story "Did Ibiza Drug Money Pay for the Madrid Bombings?" shows Mixmag has lost touch - the link between drugs and terrorism is obviously caused by drug prohibition funneling money to some of the world's more nefarious operations. There's more of a link between oil consumption and acts of horrific violence. The average clubber would be better off if you campaigned for better public transport and pill testing in clubs than trying to imply that people who buy from the black market are supporting the people who bombed Madrid. Prediction - Mixmag's publishing company Emap will pull the plug on Mixmag if they dip below 40,000 copies a month. Judging by the big unsold stacks in the shops all over the island, Ibiza-based readers won't be contributing to that total. Published 21st July, 2004. By M.F. Stuart. Source : Ibiza spotlight.com
Went that way a long time ago. Its lost all respect in the eyes of proper clubbers, I think. Some of the journalism is shocking too. Even basic things like spelling and grammar. Grrrrr.........
I stopped reading it about 2yrs ago, it's seriously gone down the toilet, they think they're total ibiza whores, but in fact they don't have a fucking scoobies. If you read it it's mostly advertising, and oh look at how fucked we get on drugs. yeah nice one. It was cutting edge, now it's not fit for lining a hampster cage.
apart from the cover cd's which are occasionally good.... has there ever been a decent "clubbers" mag anyways (music ones aside) ??
7even used to be ok - i only say that as i ended up being in about 4 different editions through various club nights lol. Apart from that i don't think so all magazines now a days are pooh, they're 6/8's advertising and pooh then 1/8th reader rantings then the 1/8 left are "articles" that really "matter to the reader", or if it's a lads mag it's pics of naked womern (nowt wrong with that in my opion lol )
mixmag still lists promise as 'top notch tech, prog and tribal house every month' what a load of shit. i only buy it 4 the cds (when theyre good) and read interviews and stuff, the journo in it has been bollocks for a long time imho. used to buy m8, canny mag with good cds but focuses too much on scottish clubbing, i know thats what its aimed at but not much good if ur not from scotland
