It depends if anything has already occurred prior to the first date. If not, then probably just drinks as then it's easy to get out of. If it has, then probably a meal, and yes I would pay.

Pubs are always a winner to loosen the mood, you should both pay, old fashioned ideas of the bloke paying (unless your loaded) are too dated imo.

i dont mind paying for her, though most dates ive been on the girl has paid for drinks etc as well

Well that probably happens to most of us, but you can still count the first time you go out alone together as a first date I guess, even if its not in the traditional sense.

i've just met someone new and we go out all the time, he always tells me that i dont need to take any money because he's paying... i like to pay my own way and even pay for him (the odd time)

No i believe in give and take, everyone is equal. Lasses campaigned for years about equal rights/sexism so old ideas like that shouldn't apply

i think going for drinks is defo best for 1st date, i agree in sharing as well, i dont feel comfortable with someone paying for me all night

that sounds good, at least you dont have to strike up a massive conversation when your watching film plus you can talk about film when ya go for drinks
