    Hate to sound like a wine snob, but the cheap brand name wines really ARE like drinking Ace lager and 20-20. Some of the really low grade ones like blossom hill californian red (no specific grapes) and the cheap whites have no real taste but just end up getting you drunk - the taste is like going from drinking freshly squeezed orange juice to co-op's 20p dilute 'squash'.... tastes more like additives than grapes.

    Seriously, it pays to spend a bit more money and get something worthwhile - remember that wine duty is a flat rate so that 3 quid bottle of wine is about 2 quid tax/duty and 1 pound actual money spent on the wine..... so a 4 quid bottle of wine is twice the actual money being spent on the wine.....

    The wines you see advertised alot are a bit like smirnoff red label vodka as well - mostly just advertising and marketing budgets being used to push a low quality vodka. While similarly priced vodkas that dont have massive marketing budgets behind them like grey goose and stolichnaya completely piss all over them. Same with wine.... lindemans, ernst and julio gallo etc - cheap wines being marketed heavily. Admiteedly they have some good stuff at the higher end but the 3.99-5.99 stuff is just cheap booze.

    If you are going to go for a more well known 'branded' wine i can recommend penfolds which are about 6-10 quid a bottle and much more worthwhile.

    Wine bore over.... but then again - you did ask :)

    I know a few frenchmen who would strangle you with a string of onions for that comment.

    Rose is generally gash here, but done correcty - a rose is a brilliant wine, just like desert wines.

    Have to say the only rose i enjoyed was at a fete in the south of france and it was rpoduced by the locals.... Saw them making it too

    Calling rose a bad wine is just as bad as saying everyone who drinks cheap wine is bad and that they should try something else.
