Im @ Leeds Uni and can download things fine from the internet but when it comes to DC++, BitTorrent and Soulseek none of them work:(

Anyone know how to fix or get around the problem?

You won't be able to mate.

Most unis have their network security set up tighter than a pair of teenage wanker's curtains.

you could always try changing the ports it uses, the firewall may only block the ones typically associated with the software.

Doubt he will even be able to download and install it

Most ports are closed you'll find. IF u can find somewhere to download it (most of these sites will be blocked) - you wont even be able to install it (due to policies inforced on student lab machines) THEN if u pikey theiving student toerags managed to get that far - it won't even connect to the network because of the port blocking.

EVEN THEN if u did manage somehow download, install, run and utilise an open port - networks monitor ALL heavy network traffic AND server software that can remotely see what is installed and running on any PC - the networks team would get the IP and logged on user and be over in 30 seconds flat, disable your account, remove any IT priviledges and possible get you booted off your course/out of uni.

    Back of the net

I imagine he is using his own laptop....why would you want to download tunes into your uni account :spangled: You will get about 10 tracks then your disk quota would be filled....

No such restrictions on laptops :)

    This is true.

Last year at northumbria someone initiated a Denial Of Service attack from within our lab directed at the University Blackboard server.

(We suspected it was some tool trying out their DoS Tool for EN365 on the wrong machine but it was someone from a different course :dunce: )

Anyway, to cut a long story short, two minutes into said attack IT support had logged the fecker off his machine and a tech bloke had actually made it into the room to grab him by the scrote.

    Winner

    UNTRUE

while the uni DOES have wifi - you can only access 1 SERVER - to enable you to log on, thus authenticating yourself.

    can it screech.

I am using a laptop not a uni PC, and Im not sure If I'm on the actual uni network proper as im in a halls 3 miles+ from uni and I don't know if it is the same network...I don't have to log onto the network each time I connect but I did have to log in with a password i was given when I first went on the internet.

Im not sure what you are talking about downloading and installing, i can download/install DC++ soulseek etc it just won't connect once open. It might even be worth asking the Internet Service Support! Until then im limited to getting stuff off MegaUpload.com!!:(

You internet activity will be logged thru your ID.

If the internet works BUT P2P doesn't - it's designed that way to stop students using university resources to download/access illegal/offensive material

BY law, universities have to abide by JANET regulations found here : http://www.ja.net/about/index.html - they provide the network infrastructure/internet

    EDIT : in particular : http://www.ja.net/services/publications/policy/aup.html
