It will be some form of connection to the main university network, even though you are a fair distance away.

The connection will be deliberately restricted to prevent people from downloading massive amounts of data and clogging up the network, not to mention the legality of them allowing you to download illegal music/software/videos.

My girlfriend is at Lancaster Uni, she's in halls too and they've gone to every effort to prevent use of the torrent stuff.

It's unlikely that the ISS will open up any ports for you - as far as they're concerned the only things you need access to are:

    Websites (Port 80)
    E-mail (web-based and POP3)
    Possibly MSN Messenger

    and that'll be about it.

MSN is installed with Windows - there's usually a cheeky way of activating it - EVEN when you think it's not installed ( add/rem Programs > Windows components )

However u can't now - Anyone trying to run .exe, .bat, .com, .vbs on open access labs won't be allowed AND emails is automatically sent via the monitoring software

hehe I remember playing around with all this stuff.

All the Instant Messenging progs were disabled til I found Trillian which worked fine!! :D

The only dload software I could get to work was DC++
All the other progs installation involved writing to directories/folders on the C: drive which i didnt have permission to access. DC++ installed in my own directory fine.
Switch to Passive mode and away I went.

Many an night sat in the 24 hour comp room with my usb zip drive attached leeching at top speeds.... disk after disk  :computer:

Janet was brought in originally for educational purposes and as such lamers downloading from p2p and the like should be blocked anyway. It does depend what uni you are at as to what the administrators are like, if they are bent they will likely have lax policies in effect regarding transfers as long as they are not routed through the USA. Is this still the case on janet, that the unis are billed for usa bound traffic only?
I know of one uni where a top site used to run and did so for years. This was a few years ago though.

quite often u can get onto IRC and use places like xdcc and ircspy if u know what you are doing. This is the only way my mate at manc uni is able to get anything through the firewall.
