Whatever you do dont speak to your GP about it, he/she will no doubt give you endless amounts of pills that simply make you worse in the longrun.

While i do think that depression can be a serious problems and there are some entirely valid reasons for people to become, and stay depressed....

.... Isnt it interesting that the more that the world decents into a 'nanny state' mentality, the more people seem to be throwing their hands up in the air when things arent going their own way and claiming 'depression'. These are problems and issues that not too very long ago, people actually did something about and relied on themselves or their close ones to help them out with.

Ive had some on and off periods in recent times and yes, sometimes its easy to start thinking 'hey, maybe im one of those millions of people who are depressed'.... but ironically every single time ive felt like that - there has been a simple solution inside that once this was dealt with or positive action was taken...... magically those feelings go away.

I think theres far too many doped up people these days who use depression as an excuse.

Harsh words, but fair i think?

(Once again, i dont deny there is a thing as clinical depression and valid reasons for this kicking off - its just a question of what is valid, and what isnt)

Gotta agree with that Brid, I reckon it's easy to self diagnose yourself with depression when you're simply stressed out.

I feel bad for anyone who genuinely has chronic depression or owt like that, it can be crippling but like RDR said I think Doctors are too quick to throw pills at their patients (most of which actually cause depression.)

If it was me I'd hope I'd try the holistic way first before resorting to pills.

Thats a very ambigious thing to say.

For instance.... lets say your uncle dies, and you were quite close to him - and for a period of a few months.... your very down and depressed.

Then your parents and peers, worried about you - have you go and see a GP who, knowing that its easier to prescribe paxil, than it is to book you on a series of courses with a therapist - or to just tell you to give things time and let you greieve naturally (and risk being sued for not 'helping').

You get a prescription.... everything is peachy and you spend a period of time in a comfortably numb state.

.... then you develop side effects and/or dependance on drugs to help you feel normal.... since you now associate moments of feeling down ... with relying on drugs to fix the problem.

So that started out as 'help'..... but it created another problem... and one a million times more serious than the natural act of someone passing away, and learning to mourn their loss and move on naturally.

    Did it help then?

Many anti-depressives including Diazapam and xanax (sp?) cause depression after extended use.

You're right though, I've never been anything more than a little stressed out so I don't know how I'd react, thats why I put I'd hope to try something else before using tablets.

Well the case is i know someone who has felt the same for about 12 years, there have been times where this person has been happy but everytime this person goes back to the same underlying state. This person also goes to work all the time and says that work makes them forget, but its when they are not at work when the problems arise.

well, me mates mam died when he was 11 and its been a bit of a rollercoaster for the lad from there.

thing is, he aint sure whats the matter, but for months he has just been bursting out in tears etc and its getting worse. some of his family have said he has all the classic signs of depression and he needs to do something about it before its too late.

Councilors can work wonders with people - anti-depressants aren't always the way - and should be treated as a VERY last resort.

teenage years/growing up are difficult anyways - i lost a parent when i was young - i was very angry and confused for a long time - but pulled thru without drugs.

Exercise is probably the best anti depressant there is.
Motivation can be a problem though
