    House of Lords

Right ladies and gents, what's your opinions on the House of Lords? I'm collecting opinions on behalf of a friend regarding the House of Lords and wether the public would be in favour of it's abolishment? Or would you prefer it stayed?

My own personal opinion is that the Lords should stay because it is my belief that by having a group that aren't publically elected gives the sytem a backbone. The Lords aren't in danger of being thrown out unlike the government in the House of Commons and therefor are more likely to stick to their opinions. The MP's in the commons are under pressure to give the public what they want in order to stay in office, but what the majority of the public want isn't always the best for the country.

    All opinions are welcome :)

Part of me believes in pure democracy which would suggest that the we shouldnt have people in charge who havent been elected... but have been 'given' power.

... However theres alot to be said about a country getting the government it deserves, and not the one it needs - Im very much anti-labour these days and it amazes me just how much blair and co get away with, without anyone questioning them (in case those 'evil tories' get back in)

.. With that in mind, the other half of me is glad that perhaps there are some people in charge who arent being voted into power by the big brother / pop idol watching masses.

Another one to crucify me with i guess :)

.... which could be argued might be better than todays 'tell them what they want to hear' brand of politics being spread across the world.

I find todays political climate very unpalatable - and arent afraid to look at what history has taught us about how we got to where we are today - Obviously Joe you like being told that we live in 'threat of terror' every five minutes, or the other rubbish thats rammed into us like an enema everytime you turn on the telly.

Maybe the irony is that 'old fashioned' politics might be better than 'nu fashioned' politics......

    Indeed !! :D

Things are never black and white ... I can see why you have a problem with new labour, but I don't think the tories have all the answers either ..... keep an open mind ....... :)

As for the Lords .... no !!

Unfortunately though, as hereditary peers are no longer in the House of Lords, those that are there are put there by politicians.

However I do think it is important to have a second house to keep a check on the lower house.

Nah the tories dont have the answers... But as i said, they seem to be the only party actively trying to reshape themselves and their policies - which as ive said before isnt something i can say about labour and blair's "ill do things my way whether you like them or not" style of leadership.

Sorry but a tory government also supports the war on terror?

You summed yourself up by saying an unelected upperclass white male majority would make for a better government than an elected one.

For the record, we're not in china - labour dont control what we see on television :D

Yes they do - If you had done your homework you would know about all the kissing up that Blair has done to Rupert Murdoch over the past few years. So that covers

    - All of sky TV
    - All the tabloid newspapers

Then you have the government coming down on the BBC like a ton of bricks after the whole iraq dossier issue - If thats not an order to 'toe the line' then i dont know what is.

    So that covers

    - All BBC Channels and news

Lastly, you make comments about a white male majori ty being in control of this country, yet you almost brag about Jewish solidarity with regards to wealth and looking after your own interests.

    Hippocracy my friend. :)

    a. We have some of the most free press in the world... to claim labour controls the media is fucking retarded.

    b. What has my background got to do with an unelected unrepresentational governement?!?!?!?

    a) I dont agree we have a free press. Theres far too many vested interests these days to call it 'free' - Its more a case of buying a paper that fits your personal politics.

    b) The point is about promoting pure democracy and the abolishment of hereditary peers for the sake of contraryism, but almost celebrating the spoils of your own background when it suits you. At least be consistant with how you promote favouratism :)
