I haven't signed this petition for the same reason.

Once you've accepted that the health service has limited resources, it is logical that you spend the money you have in the best way possible - ie on the most effective treatments.

The only way to determine this is with evidence - therefore, treatments that studies have shown to work will be provided on the NHS (unless the evidence is patchy and they are exorbitantly expensive - eg herceptin). This is what NICE does.

I know this is an emotional case, and the hypocrisy is that if it was my child, I would find some way to pay for it, down to selling the car/remortgaging the house.

But the NHS cannot fund treatments without knowing they work - there are to many that do work, that have to be paid for first.

The argument against this is that someone has to pay for the research to be done, and if noone has done it, then you could miss giving a useful treatment. If there was evidence that it didn't work, however, I wouldn't give it to my child.
