100,000 Iraqi civilians dead, says Lancet study

"About 100,000 Iraqi civilians - half of them women and children - have died in Iraq since the invasion, mostly as a result of airstrikes by coalition forces, according to the first reliable study of the death toll from Iraqi and US public health experts."

"The risk of a violent death is now 58 times higher than it was before the invasion."

That's shocking, Bush & Blair will roast slowly in hell

i can't believe how interested i am in this subject since i started to do politics at uni!

do you not think that by taking the danger (saddam) out of there now in the long run it would save tens of thousands more of lives in the future? just playing devils advocate here, but it is something to think about.

personally i dont think that just because America has the military capability to fight and win almost anywhere in the world (why do you think they are allied with us, so as we cannot beat them with our capabilities) they should force thier views on democracy in Iraq or Afghanistan. Not only because democracy is proven to work better in countries with a high HDI (human development index) but who the hell are we to play "god" as such and tell people that democracy is the best way?

Not going to work. Just get out and save our troops and innocent hostages lives.

    Thats a shocking statistic Si.

Funny how theres no convenient buzzwords or phrases to go with that, as there are with '9/11' etc etc.

I never thought i'd be living in a world arguably worse than the old Reagan / Thatcher years for foreign warmongering.

probably, but to invade Iraq to do so is highly illegal, unless the UK/US were under direct and imminent threat from Saddam, which we clearly weren't

its a pity that theres still a mass of idiots who love to hate someone or something.

Its just this weeks 'issue' that keeps people buying papers. Next week we'll have that poor woman in iraq on the front page no doubt... after being freshly beheaded or something.

Re: Re: Re: 100,000 Iraqi civilians dead, says Lancet study

"Public health experts from the United States and Iraq who carried out a survey of 1000 households in 33 randomly selected neighbourhoods of the country in September say that heart attacks, strokes and chronic illness were the main causes of death before the invasion. Afterwards, violence was the main cause of death"

So they havent really saw 100,000 bodies just done a survey of 1000 households in 33 randomly selected neigbourhoods.

it's a shocking statistic...but there will ALWAYS be civilian casualties in War.....unfortunately we cannot withdraw from Iraq - we're in too deep....and we have to defeat Al whatshisname and his insane cronies - yes, that means KILL the bastards.

you calling me an idiot???

These are Lancet figures, I'd put a lot more faith in their methodology and figures than anyone else's, especially the US cos they dont have any, and I doubt they'd publish unless they were pretty confident.

"US General Tommy Franks is widely quoted as saying 'we don't do body counts'"

so how many Iraq civilians do you think we've killed, and was it worth it?

I would imagine the coaliton are killing most civillians in Fallujah & to be to honest I just cant see Americans + Iraq's who put this report together just swanning into places like that & saying "Were just here for a survey". They would be on TV within a week loosing there heads.

It wasnt justified at all but you cant just pull out now its to late.

are u for real mate????

of course he was a threat to us!!! he was a threat to EVERYONE!!!!!!

mad men like that are a danger to every single human being in existance and they need to be dealt with.

its not nice to see innocent civilians killed during thing like this. but its also not nice to see people suffering and living in constant danger when there's madmen like him about.

im not saying its right they died, its not at all. all im saying is that as bad as it may seem, good things will probably come out of this.....

    dont u think?

Re: Re: Re: 100,000 Iraqi civilians dead, says Lancet study

No Si just using a Brid quote:D ;)

The Lancet was put together by AMERICANS + Iraqi's. In the report I read I saw the word "THINK".

I dont know how many are dead. The Kurds sleep a bit easier at night & Dick Cheney has made a lot of $$$$'s but apart from them I see few other people/groups who have gained enuff to say it was worth it.

The war in Iraq & the Iraq civilians that have died may get Bush & Blair out of office, so I am sure will be happy about that.

    nope - i dont.

i dont have an opinion on iran...dunno whats goin on there.

all i know is that saddam was a danger to everyone and had to be dealt with!

if there are similar ppl in iran then, yes, they need to be dealt with as well.
