for the ppl wanting to tick to windows...who have 64bit processors, XP64 is final now...so shud be used I wud say

even if you dont get the benefit of all ur apps running 64bit code....at least the os is..which is going to help

but then again...u cud go linux which already has gazillions of 64bit compiled apps ;) :p :lecture:

tbh u wont notice much difference...but if ur gonna buy a new processor at all anytime soon u may as well get 64bit...they are cheap as chips just like everything else.

and then u can try 64bit linux ;)

what soundcard and wireless card u got?

not a lot of 64bit s/w out yet but its starting to appear.....the main benefit atm will be the core os running in 64bit rather than slower 32bit

The OS is 64-bit code so it will be faster than ur current 32-bit one

Most applications however that u use will be 32bit...so emulated.....u wont notice a decrease in speed tho.

Main reason is to use the power of ur chip to its full potential :)

Longhorn's due for release sometime next year, there's beta's out at the mo though.

I'm waiting til there's a very stable 64-bit win OS before switching, and when there's more software support - too many issues at the mo.

the benefit is in the main part of your pc tho...the operating system....seems to be a lot more stable and a lot more responsive. so even if ur running 32bit apps...ur still onto a winner

www.suse.com - totally free as well

u can either get 32bit live DVD - which includes loads more stuff....pretty much a full system install

or to see the potential of 64bit...get the 64bit live CD....a pretty bare install but it doesnt half go

Suse 9.3 is due out in nxt few days as well so keep an eye out for that!

    Re: 64-bit

    Who's made the switch?

Me! Been running 64bit stuff for years.

    What OS u rinning?

    Solaris 10

    Whats your thoughts?

It's kinda cool, but I only really see advantages when I need to address large memory structures.

I really want an Opteron based server, then I'll stick a 64 bit linux on it.
