Above And Beyond Get The Best Essential Mix 2004 Award 20/12/04 Above & Beyond win Essential Mix of the Year Above & Beyond have won the inaugural Radio 1 ‘Essential Mix of Year’ award, as voted for by the listeners of Radio 1. The news was announced during Pete Tong’s Essential Selection radio show on Friday, during a special live broadcast from Turnmills in London. Jono and Paavo were there to accept the award from Pete and gave a big shout out to fellow Above & Beyonder Tony McGuinness, who was listening in the US. During the interview, Pete also asked how they had approached the mix and what had inspired them. The boys explained that they had put a lot of thought into every record, often making exclusive edits of tracks, and that Paul Oakenfold’s legendary Goa mix had always been a big inspiration to them. Above & Beyond’s winning mix will now be re-broadcast on BBC Radio 1 on 26th December between 1-3am GMT. Above & Beyond would like to thank all the fans that voted, and for all their support over the past year! Over 10,000 people placed their votes for the Essential Mix of the Year award, and the Top 5 were: 1. Above & Beyond 2. Sasha & Digweed 3. James Zabiela 4. Desyn Masiello 5. Pete Tong & Sander Kleinenberg
They were blatantly the best 1's. There isn't that many trance essential mixes so nearly all the tranceheads would have voted for Above & Beyond
Who cares if A&B were the best, its all about people getting upset if something trancey wins. I ain't even a tranceoholic but I would vote for something trancey every time because I know how upset non-trance music lovers get.
thats a great choice! wierd how trance wins again?! great idea to repeat the mix as well! id love them to repeat the Goa mix!
credit where its due, it was an excellent essential mix, hardly run of the mill trance by any means... 'thinking mans trance' if there is such a thing... zabelia's mix was good, but ive seen him two or three times this year now and not once been impressed... he was extremlely flat the last time i saw him with his set seemingly going nowhere, then he finished off with that god awful mix of 'song 2' ... vinny knows what i mean, and for a man who would marry prog if he could, to call zabelia's set 'boring' speaks volumes...
I didn't realise, but the re-run is in the early hours of 26th Dec - I thought it was on the night of the 26th
Il slightly amend that Tom. Dont like to be misquoted. I thought Zabiela was v good, played some excellent stuff, and had a great overall sound. If you remember, we were both commenting halfway through his set that it reminded us of Promise in 2001. But, last 45 mins he went flat as a pancake. Had no idea to take his set to the next level. You make it sound like he was poor all night. :tut: Agreed, the 'Song 2' was horrible. :bang:
