Are Mini Discs the way forwards?

Cos i had my first player in 1997, and i could record to it, but i hardly ever used it, as the only thing u could really copy from then was cd... now i ve got a net md job, and finally i ve decided to go back to using md, instead of burning cds, got really pissed off with my cd writer, cos itburnt about 1 in 4 cds, the rest i threw away...

    Anyone else switched to md?

MD is very good, but I still prefer CD. I don't think MD will take over cos no1 buys pre-recorded MDs, but for stuff like DJs recording live sets its pretty useful and much better than recording onto tape (if u have no equipment for CD burning). Also, size makes MD much better for travelling round.:D

i agree with juski, now flash media and that sort of stuff is around, you won't need disks and such fussy things like that in a few years. more and more equipment is coming out with built in storage facilities, like hard disks for the PS2, Sky plus with built in upgradable hard disks and now i was looking at a MP3 player for the car with a 20 gig drive in.

The speed at which hard drives and other media is increasing capacity is ridiculous at the moment. This time last year I bought a 40gb hdd to replace my ageing 12gb (from the year before). For the same money now, you can get an 80GB!

I'm not so sure about removable media dying the death though. I've seen one particular idea using a standard similar to CD, but instead of having one data layer on it, there are hundreds, which can be read and written to by using varations in laser equipment. The capacity of said "3d CD"?

    160GB.

    Ouch!

They talk about you being able to put all of your CDs onto a few DVDs, imagine using a 3DCD...

The future looks good. Anyone know where I can get a cheap large hdd? :p

    CD Vs MD...

I took this from an old assignment, I hope it helps.

    Stereo Minidisc
    a) Magneto-optical disc storage.
    b) Random access playback enables the MD to find areas to store material and tack a number to the existing TOC.
    c) Records 74 minute's maximum in stereo or 148 in mono.

Minidisc recorders may suffer disrupted data if the machine is jostled or placed on a vibrating surface during recording.
As you cannot make a perfect digital copy, due to generational loss in every decompress/compress cycle, the user might seek a recording medium that gives greater reproduction stability i.e. CDR

    CDR
    a) High quality recorder.
    b) Download sound files from the Internet, convert them to WAV's and burn them to CD's without any quality loss.
    c) Variable write speeds.
    d) Lifespan. A CDR disc, if cared for correctly, will last between 100-300 years, according to manufacturers.
    e) CD players are everywhere.
    f) CDR's can be easily integrated with existing studio equipment.

CDR discs scratch easily, they should be protected when not in use at all times. Since DAT has a slightly higher sampling rate than CDR technology, a DAT machine might be chosen as a secondary recording medium.

Cheapest I've seen big hard drives for is on ebuyer.com - 120Gb for 85 quid inc.

I got an Odyssey1000 (like an Apple iPod, but it has 20Gb for the price of the 10Gb iPod) and it is seriously the best thing that I have ever bought. I've currently got about 12 gig of trance and 5 gig of other assorted music (for when I'm in the mood for a bit of reggae or something else).

I've got a couple of MD players in the house, but they very rarely get used cos I keep everything as MP3 and just stick them on a CDRW if I need to.

md's sometimes distort sounds too, thats why u don't see too many of the pre-recorded ones about, apparently.

Minidiscs are handy things (ive got a sony portable) - but recording anything onto them is a pain in the rectum.... They are still massive in japan (entire sections of shops dedicated to them when i was over) - but they will never be anything more than an expensive toy :)

CDRs are great for DJ'ing off - since you can burn music onto em and use them in cd decks...

Solid state MP3 players are the bomb though.... a nice skip proof 64mb mp3 player is small, light... and sexy. and putting 1-2 hours music on them takes minutes to do over a usb connection.
I used to have a Sony Mp3 thing i got in japan a few years back - it was a beautiful thing... sold it though when funds got tight.

As for hard disc's get a Western Digital 8mb Cache version - they are the dogs bollocks and quick as fuck (i got one right here and its lovely) :D

MD's are hardly the way forward! They are ancient in technology terms!

Mini disks are very delicate and compress the audio before it goes to disk (like MP3) this reduces sound quality... so if you copy a CD to a MD you are not getting a perfect copy, the MD is inferior... making MD useless to a high end system.

The future of Audio is DVD or a close relation to,

DVD audio enables you have loads of channels of music, unlike the 2 speaker STEREO that we are all used to......... you could have say a classical music DVD playing....with NINE different speakers (like surround sound systems) playing different sounds from EACH instrument giving the next best thing for your ears to the real thing. All this can come from the one DVD disk.

Back to MD though....... I use MD as a alternative to Tape and I also use it as my portable music format. It is perfect for this or even in car music. I like it because its so easy to cut and paste and chop and change the music.... its also quite cheap and easy.
