Bored of jokes about cockle pickers?

I know it's all really funny etc but over 20 people died and it must of been a horrible, scary and slow death.

I just wonder how many jokes we would be hearing if they were all white?

    Am I being over PC?

Some of 'em are funny, no doubt. I just find it hard to laugh because I keep thinking of how terrified they must of all been.

It's odd how we make jokes out of other people's deaths.

Heard something on the radio earlier about the way we joke about things in this country... most people said satirising (sp?) events such as the Morcambe tragedy is just the British way of dealing with things... its a way of getting over it. Although I think its a bit dubious there is some truth in it. It doesn't help the families and people affected tho... this event is no different to other tragic events, before something hits the papers you will have heard enough related jokes to last a lifetime.

I admit I laughed at some of the jokes... but i have heard them all far too much now. :)

Agreed. Haven't heard any jokes about the 4 guys who died on the railway this weekend yet. All I've heard is "That's a shame that is like" etc etc.

As soon as they die and they're "Damn asylum seekers" or "Chinks" or whatever my oh so lovely workmates at Morrisons like to call them then it's "Way-hay let's all have a laugh about it"

I agree with what you're saying but I'm not going to deny that I have laughed at quite a few of these jokes.

Today at work one of the lads in the warehouse was getting angry because a wagon came in and the driver was black. He's a canny lad but as soon as he started ranting on about how it was wrong then my opinion of him changed suddenly. It's amazing how people you think are sound can be so racist without you knowing.

Whoops, I wrote more than I was planning to!

Really good point, I'd not thought of that but it's true. I've not heard a single joke about that yet.

if someone did, and they were funny, i'm sure we'd laugh tho? i dont think ppl laughed solely becuase they were chinese, more it was that the facts could be turned into something humorous(!?).

I think it has nothing to do with with racism really... its like other events... I have heard jokes on all these subjects and many more... princess di, dunblane, 9/11, iraq etc... its just the way things are in this country... some of the jokes are funny, some are not.

Yes they'd laugh. Yes I'D laugh (if they were funny), but it's the fact that no-one HAS made any jokes because there's a chance that people may find it wrong to laugh at the ordinary BRITISH joe on low pay doing a dangerous job on a railway line early in the morning who suddenly died tragically.

However, making jokes about 9/11 (Americans), Diana (Royalty), Iraq (erm....Iraqis!), or Chinese immigrants drowning (Chinese) [Sorry don't have any answer for Dunblane but I myself haven't heard any of those] is safer because there's a good chance we'll have a laugh because "we" don't necessarily like these people.

I will pretty much guarantee some jokes will appear about the rail incident soon enough...

As for the dunblane jokes... they went round when I was at school... you don't want to hear them.

there aren't any facts about the train incident that could be transformed into a joke...

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Bored of jokes about cockle pickers?

Suppose. I do sound like I'm completely saying "All jokes about any tragic incidents are racist and there are no jokes about normal white people dying", but I'm not.

But you can't deny that you've heard more jokes about the chinese people and LOTS of people laugh at them (and not one person not laugh but say "That's a bit harsh").

I don't know. Maybe we make jokes of everything. Hey a month after 9/11 (probably around about 11th October? ) we spent hour lunch in Sixth form flying paper aeroplanes at a couple of paper towers we made. Whoever made the towers fall over won.

Sly? Harsh?....YES. We KNEW it was harsh and decided to stop because people could easily be offended massively by this.

    But funny? Definately.

(Sorry if the fact that we did that DID offend anyone! :( )

Some jokes are always going to offend, people are different. Experiences can change the way people act to certain jokes... sense of humour, tolerence etc.

What someone finds hilarious another person finds disrespectful. In the end jokes make light of a situation, some people can't handle that and its fair enough...
