    Breaks anyone?

Anybody into breaks... your help would be appreciated.

Been asked to do a short breaks mix, not a clue about it

a.) Is it do-able convincingly to somebody who knows nothing about it to pull of a quick, but quite good mix...?

and B.) If so, where do I start with what to stick on it...?

    Thanks :)

Line up the percussion - not the bassline.

    Cymbals and stuff........

... end of breaks lesson :)

I know exactly why, and that's exactly what I told her.

Absolutely pathetic doing it, all it's gonna bring is the wrong exposure :spangled:

    the wrong expsoure?

there speaks the boy who's landed the good gigs.

Picotto made his name as a trance dj
Fergie made his name as hard house dj

Any dj will tell you any exposure is good exposure. So she does a one off breaks gig? All that will show is shes extremely versitile.

I fail to see why any promoter wouldn't give her a gig because shes played at a breaks night.

 that's bullshit mate, not all exposure is good exposure.

It's not just for a set, it;s for something pretty big :)

Versatility is fine, but better when it's somewhat related, which breaks kinda isn't in any way to what Amy plays.

Still, tis up to her :)

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Breaks anyone?

Allie you truely have no clue, this is why you still play egypt cottage :D

Your the sort who dismisses mainstream dj's like picotto, however dj's like picotto chose what club they play at and get paid a packet... Tell me how much does militant allie charge and where does he play?

If Amy has the oppertunity to play a big event she should deffinatly take it as it will put her in the public eye, from this exposure she has more chance of playting gigs she'd prefer.

Tell me oh smart one, what harm would this gig do her?

Amy don't listen to your boyfriend - he doesn't have a clue :D

    It's nothing about money mate.

I'd rather play the more underground places, and play what I want, and get paid fuck all, than play the huge places and have to play whatever they say.

Tell me, say for instance I played a slot at Promise, playing Hard Trance 2-3a.m, that'd be good exposure for a House DJ?
    I think not :)

Trust me Joe, I have more of a clue than you :)

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Breaks anyone?

Allie I'm not about to get into a pissing contest with you.

Reality is your a bedroom dj who's playing TWISTED LOGIC! no offence to m-x and jimmy as I respect what they're doing - but this is hardly an underground deep house night!

Most dj's regardless of their genre/standard do what amy is doing and approach music with an open mind... I doubt you can find one dj who's only ever played one style in public.

Playing this gig will do amy no harm, its not like she's playing cheesey trance at Baja... She's playing a well respected genre at a big event which will help get her name out...

And I'm sorry if she wants to make a living out of being a dj (by the website, previous gigs I'd guess this is the case)... Playing your friends pub nights isn't going to create the exposure/pay cheques that she needs.

In todays era of djing, its foolish to pigeon hole yourself to one genre...

    Wake up bedroom boy :D

    agree with Joe...
Allie it looks as though u dont consider yourself a DJ....only a house DJ

the exsposure may not be in the genre your into, but surely its showcasing your skills as a DJ

I'd imagine it be fairly tricky to pull it of if your not into it - it's mixed slightly differently is it not ??? It may do more harm than good in that sense... in other words it may make you look pish but that's different to what Joes saying.

what's the gig Amy? will you loose out on it if you don't submit a breaks mix? If that's the case go for it.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Breaks anyone?

    And you're a DJ Joe?

You wouldn't tell your grandmother how to suck eggs, don't tell me how to do my thing either :)

Yes, I play Twisted Logic. So? I'm not an arrogant, big-headed DJ that won't play because it's not good enough.
Nor did I ever say it was an underground Deep House night. I enjoyedt he crack at the launch, and went down well, especially considering what I played was entirely what I wanted to play, and rather underground :)

I'm not on aboutt Amy pigeon-holing herself, or anything like that.
It would be a complete case of playing breaks, a genre she doesn't necessarily like (as she informed me today), just because of the calibre of the gig.
The 'brief' she had was "Try and keep it as breakbeat as you can", however we both know another person that's had EXACTLY the same gig and played House, so if they want her bad enough, surely the time will come to do it that way too?

I totally agree with CraigB. and that's partially where I was coming from. Breaks isn't soemthing you can jump feet first into, breaks fans and breaks DJs would be able to tell straight away that it wasn't a true breaks DJ, which could do more harm than good :)

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Breaks anyone?

I'm not telling you how to dj - I'm telling you how publicity works - something you obviously haven't sussed as your still a bedroom dj :D

And how do you know I'm not a dj? Not every1 on this bored feels the need to tell every1 all the pubs they've played :D

If they want her bad enoguh?!?!?!? They're the ones with the control! Please Amy for your own sake take Allies advice with a spoonfull of salt. Its not a case of them needing Amy to play or them needing the publicity - this is about getting Amy's name out to a larger audience...

Allie you seriosuly need to think about the damage you may be doing to her career.

I don't know amy's ability, her learning speed or how far away the gig is, have a little confidence in her though...
