Right, I'm on JSA at the minute but I've been offered a bar job for the weekends. Thing is, it's gonna be from 8 till 2/3am and they only pay £1.50 towards your taxi. It costs me about £14 to get home in a taxi so I'd be using half of my weekly wages for my journey home each week.. take off a few other expenses and I'm left with next to nowt.

I got told there was no work available in my previous job... got offered another one which turned out to be a shifty pyramid scheme, and all the others keep asking if I have experience. I want to say no to this bar job but considering how hard it is to get one these days without previous experience, I feel like it could be worth doing for a month or so just so I can stick it on my CV to boost the chances of someone else taking me on afterwards and to make things easier for me when I move away from home for uni in September. Apparently having a range of qualifications including decent GCSE's and 2 BTEC National Diplomas doesn't help you get the most basic of jobs these days.

Obviously you're supposed to sign off JSA if you're working, but how likely am I to get caught if I take the job for say, a month without telling them? I know some people are gonna cringe at this question but unless you're also unemployed, you don't know what it feels like

Oh and you only need to sign off JSA if you are working over 16 hours a week any more is classed as full time. Under that and you need to let them know as you loose a certain amount of benefit but you won't loose it all it depends on how much you will be earning. Something like if you are earning less than you would claiming then they make up the difference to what you are entitled i think.

Riding a bike isn't convenient because I don't have one. I used to borrow my dads in the mornings but he uses his at night.

I'm not upto scatch on the benefits as i don't deal with the public but im pretty sure that you can still get benefit of some kind at a lower rate. but once you are working or earning over a certain amount per week then your entitlement stops.

Just go to the jobcentre and speak to someone. Don't tell them it is permanent just say it is a temp job and you want to accept it but are worried as you wont be earning much etc and you don't want to have the hassle of starting a new claim if the job is only for 3 weeks and you have to sign off. They'll work out how much you can get etc, do a better off calculation and explain things like rapid reclaims.

It's not like you are going to ahve people following you about and you'll only get caught if your in a bar and your adviser see's you working but the best advise you'll get will be in there.

I've never met a bunch of people less helpful than those at the jobcentre. They seem to tar everyone with the same old 'you're a scally who doesn't even want a job' brush and they try talking to you like you're either 10 years old, or confused. I told the bloke today about the trial I have set up for the bar and he went nuts because I hadn't arranged it with him first.. even though he'd never once mentioned that I'd need to. Then he had a go at me because he thought I was bullshitting but it turns out he thought it was Wednesday today hence the tomorrow night/Friday night mix up that was going on in his head. Then he phoned some woman about this trial, and kept telling her I was working tonight. He's a cunt and I'd say 90% of the others I've spoken to don't have a clue what they're doing. When I was doing a 12 week course with the Princes trust, I got the same old carry on of what is the course, why are you doing it, who said you're allowed to do it etc etc. I'm pretty sure that once you've been unemployed for a certain length of time, they give you a job there.

I'll phone them and ask what I'll be entitled to but I'll have to make sure i have about 3 hours spare..

Couldn't of said it better myself! Fucking hell on if you go in 2 mins late or foget your job diary but if they are running slightly behind, they'll try & get you to sign asap & palm you off without doing a jobsearch which is a fucking joke anyway, the only reason I dont say owt is so I can get out the godforsaken chav capital of the world asap. Gateshead JobCentre is fucking grim, really really grim.

Although it's more of a fiddle it for a month in the hope that I get a realistic job kinda thing.

ps. Although I didn't know I may still be entitled to some money even if I get a job. The fuckers down in Blaydon never bothered to tell me about any of this because every time i go in it's a 'quick sign this and then go' job.

Gateshead job centre made me happy. I walked in for an interview, was there for 10 mins, walked out, and realised that no matter what happens in my life i will always be better off than the horrors that sit around there.

Mr.B, if its only for a month, id walk it. It may take a while, and piss you off, but i worked from 3-7 am 5 mornings a week for 3 years doing a milkround, then went to school (13-16 yrs old). We pretty much ran the whole thing. Only got £35 a week.
If it gets you money, then take it. Simples

dont tell em as long as you dont go over the magic number of hours (is it 17?/) you dont pay tax so it dosnt click on the system (or at least it didnt used too).
