Clipping/Red Lining I have been watching a few local DJ's of late and had quite a few CD's sent to me some are really good but it's made me laugh just how poorly some of them are put together. Not mixing or tune selection but how they have been recorded. Some are so distorted you can't really make out what's going on, the levels are clearly all over the place. Over powering mixes and v poor sound reproduction. How many of you have heard of clipping or red lining some call it ? Some of the CD's I have had sent I have posted feedback to the DJ, some of them have no idea what I'm talking about. When watching some play out also, they have very little idea about controlling the levels/gains to ensure the best sound quality is achieved. All set UP's are different, but some are missing out on some basic skills and it's not on the mixing front.
leanred about it awhile ago, now im always aware of of tring to keep the gains right. especially for bringing in tunes, making sure the levels are near the same. still have some problems with tunes clipping at really low volume, iend up have to play about with the master to keep the volume of the tune loud and not have it in the red
not till late Jim, I'm finished @ 10. I have loads of prog to drop off @ Miks and some rifts @ Gerodies
at home its as easy as turning it down, my soundcard autocompresses audio if its hitting 99% volume tho i never mix that loud, production is a diifferent matter , best idea is to record 60-80% vol then normalise it and run it through a 1.5:1 compressor with something like a -5Db limit to get max sound with no clipping.
