    Dog advice needed

My little staffy has been to the vets this morning as she has had an ongoing skin complaint which we have now discovered to be an allergy

she has been given a course of anti biotics, some oil for her food, somje shampoo, some ear drops, and a course of steroids. = £75

    my questions are these:

I'm not sure about the steroids, i didnt want to ask in the vets and appear COMPLETELY thick.....(where as you all know i am so no harm done!) anyway, she is a very small staffy by breed as i dont like really big staffy's and you hear lots of horror stories about Staffy's and steroids etc. It's only 1 tablet per day for 3 days, then 1 tablet every other day.....Will this affect her physique, or more importantly her temperament....cos she's wicked and i dont want her changing on me.

You might think that this sounds ridiculous but it happened to our old dog but she was on a longer course, but does this matter???

My other main question is this, i have been looking to get her insured, she's never been to the vets for anything yet...the insurance is £10 per month per dog and i have 2....

do i get both of them insured or should i just get the staffy insured in the meantime incase she needs further treatment?

or should i just pay for the treatment for both and not bother with insurance?

    Many Thanks for your time

the steroids they use for skin complaints aren't the same as the steroids that effect physique and temperament... there are issues with long term use but i don't think thats an issue here...

and most insurance you have to pay the 1st £50 anyway (i think, thats what ours is) so it depends if the trips to the vet are going to cost much more than that?

hope she gets better soon! :)

My mum's dog was on steroids for years due to skin problems. She didn't change in size or temprament. They are not completely without other side effects though.

she's hopefully only going to be on them for 2 weeks.....i think i'm just over reacting

But back the insurance question......There's no question about whether its worth at is its potentially the dogs life we're talking about, however my problem is that

£20 per month for both dogs is a bit excessive, more than my car insurance for a start.

Should i just get one insured, i've never had any problems with either of them so far really.....if i only get 1, which 1?

    or neither?

    or both?

the dog doctor on their advert scares me :(

i doubt it, they would question why i was changing the dog's details, if i lied and didnt tell them about the condition they'd just not pay out.

big dog is getting old now anyway, he's 9 this year....so i might just get the little one done

keep the advice coming in, i'm off to work but will check back on line later

    thanks.....x

I dont think the steroids will make much difference unless your dogs are hammering the weights.

The insurance company we deal with for pets won't cover an existing medical condition :D

I was merely pointing out that some companies will not :D

£3000 isn't that much for a condition for a young dog that's gonna need treatment for the rest of it's life is it

it's better than not doing it at all though.......

i'm not taking it though cos i dont think they condition will mean bills of over £50 per time and that is the xs for claiming so not much point really

well i'm not taking it for that reason anyway, but i think insurance for other stuff is obviously worth it
