    Eugenics

    Are they good or bad?

I'm bored shitless of reading about "old school daft things" and "lost part 345677 episode 7"... so thought I'd start this thread :D

how can we debate on a subject if your opinion is one I have given you? ;)

Eugenics is at its most basic selective breeding in humans.

Bad, very much so in my opinion

Smacks a bit too much of the master race touted by the Nazi's and it removes alot of choice for people

I can see the projected benefits but l disagree with it fundamentally

You're right about it being close to what the natzi party were aiming for...

But at the same time it could have its benefits like saving people with rare diseases, if somebody was bred who then went on to save lives surely that is nothing but a good thing?

Any science can be manipulated and contorted into a more sinster manifestation, but that shouldn't discredit the science.

What does irradicating genetical diseases have to do with aryan supremacy?

And if I were to take the guise of devils advocate, why is selective breeding such a bad thing? In the past mankind has had to rely on chance genetic mutations for much of our species evolution... Man now has the opertunity to take his destiny in his own hands and not leave it to chance.

As l said the project benefits are good but anything that removes choice for people is a loss of human rights which is a worse thing imo

yeh but its how far that they make take it that worries people i think.

selective breeding could obviously be a positive thing for humans however:

    a) it could be ridiculous with this how designer baby thing with humans deciding things on looks

    b) even if we did breed to get a stronger human against viruses etc, it can never be certain that this will work.

For example, if we all suddenly became immune to flu and many other things. It would only take one new mutant virus to wipe out practically a whole race of people in the future.

I agree that if something can be done to increase our immunity, life expectancy what ever then great but there are always going to be huge side effects many of which we can't even contemplate

You're choice or even right to be individual and 'how god made you' as opposed to how someone in a lab decided you would turn out.

i think that humans are too inquisitive about things really. Maybe science should focus more on making things that could potentially help us if we need it, not how to recreate man so that there won't be necessary!

But my parents made me and raised me in their image, I trusted there judgement as a child and I trust their judgement as an adult.

I know many people with disablities both mental and physical - not one of these would chose to of been born with these disabilities.

Youre taking quit an evangelical stance.

think about it though, if we all became immune to whatever bugs and so on that are knocking about in the future, then it really would take a new strain of something to have devestating effects

But eugenics provides the solution to most of the problems that science seeks to cure.

Maybe so but things happen for a reason, i pointed out why i think the choice is lost but i still agree with Eugenics.

i think maybe he meant the choice of who you pair up with. If we all sunddenly become quite similar in characteristics etc, it takes away a lot of variety.

Of course those people who have disabilities would probably never chose to be like that, but sometiems it is from the parents who chose to come together who have specific genes that create this. It may be an unconscious decision but its happened.
