Holocaust denier sentenced to 3 years

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/4730832.stm

Interesting given the fracas over the recent 'anti-islam' cartoons and question of right to free speech that this fella has been jailed. Wouldn't have happened in this country i don't think. Goes to show we're a fair way ahead of our european 'friends' in the acceptence of liberal / free speech values.

Oh, and I think the bloke's a tosser. Just for the record.

In 2000, a British court threw out a libel action he had brought, and declared him "an active Holocaust denier... anti-Semitic and racist".

Joe must love this guy :p

I think he admits that evidence has become available since the collapse of the Soviet Union and Berlin wall to contradict his opinion (which he made 17 years ago). What his initial reasoning was i don't know. Can't say that's an excuse though.

for the record though...... eastern European countries have a MASSIVELY different perspective on the second world war then we do. They definitely haven't forgotten and the wounds are still as raw as 1945. I was gob smacked by the city of Budapest's reaction to its memorial day when I was there........ the entire city was still and quiet for hours and there was 100's of ppl crying in the streets... it was so eerier, like it happened last year.

We where never occupied and cant even imagine how these peoples where effected by the Nazi's. That's why this sentence seems harsh to us.

it's not suprising people think it's a harsh sentence...people who kill someone when driving can get a lesser sentence than that..

this country is fucked up where the legal system is concerned....they're too bothered about criminals rights... they're the fuckers who has violated someone elses right...they should have gave up any rights when they committed the crime & not get a sentence in a place with better rooms than some hotels

got off the subject with my min rant sorry

    anything wrong?

He's been one of the biggest recruitment tools the neo-nazi movement has... He compiled fallacious arguments to promote hitler and encourage antisemitism.

A just punishment for a dangerous coward.

Agree Joe, but potentially by jailing him you create a sort of martyr for the far-right crowd. His thoughts are completely discredited amongst historians, and much as I completely disagree with his comments it has been argued he (and others like him) are taking the blame for a nations guilt.

he wrote a book full of lies woopy do, you gonna put everyone who works at the daily star in jail for printing lies everyday.

I mean come on, what he wrote about was wrong, but being jailed for it, its harsh as fuck.

as a result of his books thousands of people have joined western nazi organisations, countries like iran have adopted his theories on the holocaust to incite antisemitism.

It is unlikely that Hitler ever killed one Jew with his hands, it was under his guidence that millions died... similarly Irving has the blood of hundreds of jews on his hands.

Words are the most powerful weapon man has, if you seriously believe "he wrote a book" you have no clue as to what he wrote and what it lead to... He done far more than write a book, he provided a platform for antisemites to add credibility to their prejudice.

I think 3 or 6 months would have served the purpose just as well as 3 years, but tbh I've got fuck all sympathy for him.

It's astounding how little the yoof today understand about what really went on in Europe a mere 60 years ago
