How do none-uni-loan students afford to live in flats?

I'm considering moving out this year to somewhere like heaton where the average weekly rent is about £55 per week. I'm assuming bills are on top of that.. then there's food bills. Also either money for public transport, or petrol.

Are there any students here who don't have the advantage of a uni loan who live in flats? How many hours do you work per week on top of college? (I have a 15 hours minimum course to attend over 4 days.. some weeks will be more due to theatre rehearsals etc).

It all sounds like too much to realistically afford to me :( £55 rent then say, £15 food shopping, £12 weekly bus pass, comes to £82 plus whatever house bills there are.. so say £100 per week?

For me, moving out is going to be that step forward where i stop relying on my parents though. I'd have to sell all sorts of illegal things to afford £100 p/w pure living costs.

LOANS LOANS LOANS CREDIT CARDS OVERDRAFTS AND MORE LOANS

A student grant back in the old days would have covered these .... and might have left a bit over - Massive hyperinflation in the house market which has pushed up rents, and the simultaneous removal of grants and introduction of fee's have meant theres little you can do but get into debt unless your folks are minted - or you work your bum off in a part time job.

Or be the college dope dealer

I'm really sick of living at home now and i dunno if i can go another 2 years before moving out. I could work every night and a saturday.. plus ALG from the college which is £30 per week.

How much on average do people pay for their weekly/monthly bills?

ull spend more then 100 like. dont estimate over a week. ur better doing it monthly so you can add on electricity, gas, telly if you get one. you look at between 50 - 90 quid per quater for gas and same for electricity depending on what you use obviously.
i live with 2 mates. 702 per 1/4 rent. then theres bills. but weve all got computers and turntables. first 3 month gas was 93 quid like. so ud hav to earn at least 150 a week.

fucking hell we lived i a right shit hole and that was 50 quid, when we looked a decent place was going to be around 70 quid a week like.

i reckon you'll need about 150 a week rent, bills, food and a couple of pints.

I don't want a loan as i'll be getting into my uni debt within 2 years and I don't want to end up with more debt than I need to have.

Surely if there are more people living in a house, the bills are going to be a bit less.. Definately so if you had 4 people as opposed to 2, I'd assume.

I wonder if my parents would help me out  I think they're gonna have to actually.

I'll only get a house with people i know. I couldn't be dealing with the stress of fitting into a house full of people i'd never met.

My loan went on paying my Fees

Just get a job like most normal people have to

Move somewhere where you dont pay £55 rent a week, move to Fenham....our rent for a 4 Bedroom House (which was actually semi nice and my room was massive) was £173 a month. Dont be so gay and move in with people you dont know, half the fun of Uni is meeting loads of new people.

Whats this £12 weekly bus pass? If you live in town you can just walk to most of the campuses

£15 food is realistic unless you like the good stuff...me and my lass spend about £50 a week on food

I worked 20 hours a week and that was enough....i wouldnt really wanted to have done more.

back in my day (95 > 98), we payed about £35pp/pw 4 bed shared house in studentville - all be it a shit hole - but i had grants (we were poor) AND student loans AND i worked about 25-30 hours per week - it had to be done to get away from the parents

it was easier times then, i moved out at 18 and never looked back
