    Internet help

Right, can someone advise me please?

Im currently on NTL cable 4mb for £25 a month, which I think is shit.

Ive been looking at changing provider and I think BT have an alright deal with upto 8mb for £10 for first 6 months, then £18 for the rest. Now thats through a phone line. Ive dont a test via their website and they say Im close eunf to the exchange to get around 6mb, which is obviously better than what I get for cheaper too.

Virgin also have it for £15 a month but when I do their test, its so vague and just says I can get "upto 8mb". Well yeah obviously. But 2mb is "upto" as well.

Is there any main difference between cable and phone line? How likely is it I'll get this 6mb? Im just concerned that I'll change and I'll get a poorer speed? :(

Also, cos BT is so big and probs has loooads of broadband people, am I likely to get a shit service/speed through the busy peak times? More so than thru cable or a smaller provider?

    Thanks x

    Re: Internet help

Have you taken into account that those prices are plus your monthly line rental?

As you have been told it does depend how close to the exchange your are when you are on ADSL (Net through BT line) and yeah, at peak times you are likely to notice your speed reducing a lot compared to cable!

As the advert says 'if you can get cable, you should'

Basically, you need to decide what is more important, cost or speed!

Cable is more stable aswell :)

The test arent reliable in my experience.I done a test with plus.net and they said I would be able to get between 6-8 mb reliably...I never get quicker than 3mb.Cable is so much better than going through a phoneline

Rach... don't switch providers... NTL/Telewest are the best there is.

The thing with ADSL and there "up to" services is that the download rates vay significantly depending upon how far away you are from the terminal and, afaik, how many users are using that terminal.

    With Cable.. that doesn't matter.

25 notes is mint.. if its too much then drop to 2MB for 17 notes.. you'll still probably get better transfer rates than if you were on ADSL..

Once I get this guide to newsgroups sorted I can guarantee that I can get you downloading at 500kbs.

    God.. I'm geeky 2night lol..

Rach, downgrade your 4 meg to 2 for a month and see what you think, that's £17.99 (unless you ring up and kick off so they do it for £14.99 :p ) i bet you barely notice the difference :)
