    Is clubbing changing?

Maybe im getting old, but alot of things seem very different to how they were maybe 5-6 years ago. All the big names have died down as actual club nights and seem to be either just getting on with things quietly (Goodgreef, GodsKitchen) or reinventing themselves as brand names to stick on everything (Ministry, Cream, Crasher etc).

The best clubs seem to be making the least noise of all (Fabric, Turnmills etc) ... but then again they never did?

Trance seems to be turning into more and more of a novelty instead of being EVERYWHERE like it was a while ago.... You have to travel long distances or be near a capital city to get the whole big room feel that was everywhere a while ago.

Cyber clothes seem to becoming more and more of a joke amongst clubbers? Still quite fun but only in a 'look how it was' way?

More housey nights and variations on things like techno seem to be getting more and more popular and attracting a better crowd than the groupie dj chasers of yesteryear?

Will stuff like 'classic' trance eventually be something you have to go to amsterdam to see? ....

Anyone else noticing any changes? Or am i just making this all up :)

when i first started going out everyone dressed in cyber + clubs i.e like sunnies would sell out weeks in advance. It was less ££ to see big names back then

nowadays the clubbers back then have grown up and matured and clubbing becomes a luxury after other commitments such as mortgages etc

I think the price clubs charge is ridiculous and the fact im sick of going to events to see the dj which i want to see and they not turning up or theyve been falsely advertised, Godskitchen is a prime example of this

There is a thread like this at least once a month.

Trance is dying, clubbing's changing, get over it and move on.

Its not a whinge IN THE SLIGHTEST - its asking about what people are noticing that has changed.

Clubbing has changed because the people that go clubbing have. More than likely because they have got older! I prefer House music these days to Trance (i was bang into Trance for 8 years) and i reckon thats where my musical/clubbing future lies.

There's a new Generation of Clubbers having the time of their lives right now, doing things differently to how we probably did! They'll more than likely be having these conversations in a few years time too...

i blame the quality of cowies

people these days seem to have to take 5 to get the same effect that 1 used to do

As for trance dying, hasnt it been dying for years yet people still seem to like it? If anything, i am more likely to pay attention to a trance track than i was 3 years ago...if only it wasnt so fast

I reckon these days, due to the internet and global media, people are more aware of different kinds of dance music than they might have been 5/6 years ago. Unless you were a dj/avid music fan then it was almost impossible to keep up with all the brand brand brand new stuff.

Now that the filsharing/downloading mixes is so massive, people are more aware of new music/styles and are therefore more likely to actually like a bigger variety of stuff than theywould have been 5/6 years ago so people are losing their affinity to one kind of music.

Personally I think you will see more and more clubs with a much wider music policy than before so people can actually hear hiphop , disco, house, breaks , techno, prog, trance all in one night

i am bang into my trance and always have been

it used to be big back in the 90's when it went all comericial but then the popularity went to hip hop and now its going to indie. Now i just think trance and most other forms of electronic music have went back to where it should be, more underground. i used to hate seeing trance slap bang all over the tv screens and all commercial n that.

Clubbing has gone through many, many changes over the years. What went on 18 or so years ago was massively different to how it was 10 years ago, which is different to how it was 5 years ago and so on.

Shit, just realised I first went clubbing 18 years ago. :(

i agree with the reason being downloading but i don't think its to do with variety at all.

Imo it more to do with the fact that when people go out now they've heard all the tunes that get played already, people slate the dj's for playing the sames sets over and over.

When in reality dj's have always done this, its just back then people only heard these tunes when they were out so didn't remember what they were like.

Basically clubbing used to be about listening to new music that you haven't heard before, but now its impossible for dj's to get ahead because of the internet.

Im glad the whole Radio 1 / Media hype seems to be backing off a bit ..... Films like Kevin and Perry prove that clubbing became too mainstream for its own good and became something that any old part time music fan could dip in and out of.

Having said that, id reckon many of the clubbers around today (including me) got interested back in the whole Judge Jules / Seb Fontaine days because it was easily accessible .....

.... If things like trance and HH die off (not die, just in terms of HYPE) - does that mean the average age of people going out might end up moving up again?

no there will just be other music that gets listened to by the youngsters.

I think from now on clubbing for most people won't be as good because all people do is moan about dj's and clubs, not being the same as they used, but i still love it as much as i did back then so its all good for me.

Just looked at your profile - it was a few months before you were born!

That's it, I'm officially depressed. And old.

i'd say it's peoples attitudes to WHY they go out nowadays AND the mp3/filesharing culture thats around.

with vinyl, there was always the exclusivity with certain DJs and certain clubs - now anyone can get any track as soon as they've heard it in the most recent mix they've downloaded. nothings new anymore - trance was the first genre to lose out to this as it was so popular that everyone had the current fav tune within minutes and are bored of it a week later.

trance has been dying for years, it's just not mainsteam so the glory days we loved where every city had it's only massive night, every weekend is now gone and the people with 5 minute attention spans have moved onto their next trendy fad

For me, trance died when every tune started sounding the same (ie, from '98 onwards). There was a brief resurgence around '02, when some decent new stuff started coming out, but for me it is a very limited genre.

i wouldn't say it limited its just the producers don't try and evolve the genre they just stick to the same rules, which is why it became stale.
