i thought it was the worst set id ever had the misfortune to hear. Awful bland trance that every fucker plays and some truely terrible mixing. i remember at one point the beat matching was so far out that he had to match to the next beat instead of the original on bar beat

as for their productions they were good for about 3 tunes, then when they didnt bother changing their style one little bit and had about 20 remixes out sounding the same in the space of 6 months i got bored very quickly

Having been to nearly every promise that was on last year I really don't think he was a lot like the other DJ's that have played at all. He was quite driving and tough, I thought he was something a bit different. Mixing was deffinitely the last thing on my mind at the time. ;)

while he may well have played new stuff to people at promise for any1 who listens to sets online from the usual dutch suspects and checks tracklists etc then its blantant to see that he really is just like hundreds of others out there. and when he cant mix well then it kinda defeats the point really. why play the same stuff as others if your just gonna do it badly compared to them? Far too much of that going on in trance atm. But the bigger problem is that people who listen to trance actually seem to think thats good :spangled:

The difference though is that I and the majority of people who go to Promise don't listen to online sets and check tracklists often. If you do that, then obviously you're going to become more accustomed to track ID's and hearing a set out won't sound as fresh or exciting.

Compared to the majority that played there last year, he did something a bit different in my opinion and aslong as there is wicked music, mixing is the last thing on my mind.

well thats fair enuff to say that about just slightly off mixing but their mixing was absolutly terrible.

I think the point im trying to make is why bother booking some1 who plays the same tunes as every1 else when u could just book some1 else who can play all that and mix well and be cheaper to book.

Also it just annoys me at times that so many people seem to be happy listening to so much sub stardard trance these days. Im not some techno or prog elitist saying that as trance is still and will prob always will be my preferred choice of music but the amount of tracks i see mentioned in this forum and others that is said to be good but is actually just the same old shit thats not really that well produced is shocking. People complain about the state of trance these days but the problem is that people are actually buying this watered down shite.

heh im not having a go at u now rossy may i point out, just a general rant, think i woke up on wrong side of my bed this morning :p

what youse arguing about, its trance, it all sounds the same nowadays, imo its lost its edge.
he was half decent tho i thought, mixing wasnt spot on but when i seen him in manchester he was spot on, im sure everyone on here plays flawless sets every time they play out

neither am I mate, nothing wrong with a good old rant ;)

I totally agree with you with the point about some of the watered down trance out there, which is why for me that night stood out as something different from a lot of the other promise sets I heard last year.

For some reason I seemed to remember the music as quite driving and tough as opposed to everything being all uplifting and floaty (which I still do like a lot of). Maybe it was just my interpretation of the night, I can't really remember the music, just what I thought about it afterwards. ;)

Yes it's amazing how similiar it all sounds. I had an armin set playing earlier and thought he played the same tune nine times in a row. ;)

Personally I think that the "it all sounds the same" argument is very weak and it would be more down to a persons music tastes changing as opposed to the music doing it (or not changing as the case may be).

From a production perspective what is any other form of dance music doing that is so innovating and new? What new sounds and structures are prog or techno or anything else implementing that has never been done before?

Nothing in my opinion, but if you've completely rinsed your trance collection and started listening to more prog/techno/breaks/house (or whatever else) then it's obviously going to sound like it has a cutting edge over trance.
