Nuclear Bombs - Good thing or bad?

Good old Maggie Thatcher said "the world would be a more dangerous place WITHOUT nuclear weapons" and britains current Trident nuclear missles are about to go out of date - so should we replace them? Do we still need them?

the cold war is over BUt we now face a different threat - are THEY scared by the nuclear threat?

I dont think britain needs any nuclear weapons at all ... maybe it sounds lazy but we arent going around the world picking on other countries - we usually follow what america does, so lets give them troop support and let them work on their nuclear deterrants.

I cant believe we are re-starting the trident programme (which seemed a little more credible back in the days of the cold war when Maggie was in charge), when people are up to their eyeballs in debt and our national transport, water and communications infrastructure is lagging baheind the rest of the world.

    We dont need em.

    I think we need them.

There are countries currently working on the long range ballistic systems to deliver nuclear warheads, we need to show were a) not a soft touch and b) we have the capability of defending ourselves.

In an ideal world, I would prefer no bombs at all but unfortunatly it is not.

Problem is, I can imagine these new nuclear powers using these weapons at the first possible chance.

if nuclear warheads start flying round there won't be any point in defending ourselves the planet would be fucked.

we've currently got 200 trident missles, each 8 times more destructive than the hiroshima bomb - overkill maybe?

would it be sensible to buy maybe only 5 or 10 instead of replacing ALL of them?

less missles mean less subs, less silos and launchers - could be a money saver all round yet still have a deterent.

However, again, deterents are ok against countries BUT not terrorists and their guerrila tactics

    it's an interesting debate

The thought of anybody dropping a nuclear weapon anywhere scares the shit out of me.

I've seen some horrible films in the past about them, and most of you will have seen that woman's dream about one going off in the USA in Terminator 2 where she was set on fire, burned to a crisp for a minute, and blown apart by a wave of fire spreading for miles outward from the blast.

    Nasty.

aye, and all the pictures of japs walking around with skin hanging off after hiroshima. But if we didnt have them then rogue states like N. Korea would be able to hold the world to ransom.

nowt will put the shits up a rogue state like having a vanguard or ohio class parked off their beach with some tall boys standing to attention.

we need them as a deterent simple as that, they cat be used by us as a solution to a nuclear terrorist attack so they will only gather dust until rogue nations kick up a fuss
