Oakenfold on the future of DJ'ing

    http://www.cnn.com/2004/TECH/10/18/explorers.pauloakenfold/index.html

Dont agree with him at all - sounds like he's put on his 'theoretical purist' cap and done an interview from that perspective.

I severely doubt he's been in a record store for years.

You dont 'lock in' beats on a cdj either - tunes still have to be beatmatched on cd players also and fall out of time if the pitches arent matched just as easily as with vinyl decks.

The interview picture makes him look about 18 aswell with the flash on his face when in actual fact he's knocking on for 40.

I cant take a thing Oakie does seriously anymore - Gutted, he used to be my hero in the dance scene, that Global Underground oslo cd seems a million miles away from the stuff he does or the sets he plays these days.

Can we say "airbrush"? :D :p

I see where you're coming from mate. He's making alot of observations that don't seem grounded in the reality and he's been inconsistent for a while now.

    As you say it's a shame :(

Have to say Brid i totally disagree with u and my views are pretty much along the lines of oakies. I never use cd's, cant stand using cds and to me it does feel impersonal and that some of the art has been taken away from dj-ing with the new technology. As he says, using vinyl gives you more of a feel for everythin. Possibly just down to personal taste and could well be just an opinion....but thats mine :D

He's a vinyl purist, thats all.
Personally I think that he is no where near as good as what he was ''back in the day'' but he is still a good DJ, he's moved onto different things and maybe its time for him to hang up his headphones. I have 100% respect for what Paul has done for dance and trance in particular although I do feel that his views from that interview are stuck in 1999:)

Shame Oakie has gone down the route he has.

He is the one who got me into this and I still have respect for his early work, but I cant believe the shit he plays these days.

2 of my all time best clubbing moments have involved Oakie. Courtyard at Cream in 97. He had that room fuckin jumpin. Amazing atmosphere. Maybe one of most influential residencies ever.

Second time, Gatecrasher at Lotherton Hall 99. That tent was rocking. Amazing set.

Also for anyone who has not heard it. Download his Goa essential mix from . Fuckin amazing stuff. Proper trance. Mixing is shabby but the tunes are ace

i prefer using Vinyl, as i feel more comfortable with using them, just pressing buttons on stuff on a CD deck feels un-natural to me! CD's do come in handy when u have the odd unsigned track u want to play, but playing a full set using nearly all CD's does get a bit boring!

i don't get at all how using cds over vinyl seems impersonal...

how about if you do tiny edits to a tune, say only adding a couple of loops to the intro or outro..how is that less impersonal than just playing the 12"?

you are still using a medium basically the same as a vinyl...i can see your point if you're talking about using a laptop etc!

for me the only advantage vinyl has is that it looks good on the shelf...apart from that, it's cds all the way!

If you'd read the interview you would see he's making it out like he does all his tune shopping at some tiny independant shop as if he's 'doing his part' when i bet his tunes come via fedex right from the labels directly.

Fair do's although im not saying i think cd's are better or worse than vinyl or pushing my opinion - the whole interview/article was pubished on CNN for one and just sounds like an old man having a stab at an industry that constantly evolves while he seems to have stood still ever since 'planet perfecto - bullet in the gun' was played in 1999.

A case of not practicing what he's preaching it seems on his part.

agreed!!!, i never thought the day would come when i'd be playin a large amount of me set off cd, or sometimes even a whole set. dont get me wrong i love vinyl, but cd's are the future, besides from being able to play unsigned tracks and your own productions, they sound better, are easier to transport to gigs and.........if u scratch one u can easily burn a new copy......instead of hunting the track down and paying ridiculous amounts for a new copy if it happens to be a rarity on ebay!!!

    cd's for me anyday!!!

ditto!!!, it is the future and nobody can stop it tbh!!! if people dont like it then fair enough but personally i like it. one of the reasons i bought me CDJ's was to keep up with everyone, more and more big names were using cd's and thats why i started. your ahead of the game if u can produce and play your own material in a club that nobody else has and the only way u can do that is by cd!!! simple really!!!

    Vinyl = :king:

    Digital Downloads = :dunce:

If you saw what greg wilson did a suono with two decks and -   - a reel to reel, then you'd understand that you don't need the latest technology to do somehting exciting and forward thinking.

Too many people are plugging for digital technology and the only people that will win are the big coporate companies who make and sell the equipment. - like pioneer and sony etc

The only DJs who endorse the products so much in the media are the ones who are sponsored by them - eg james zabelia, roger sanchez etc, and so they are getting quite a bit of money for saying that "this is the best thing to come out in the world...........", they haven't just bought one and decided to tell the whole world about it you know?

They tried to phase out vinyl with CDs and it didn't work so now they're trying to do it with downloads.

Do you really think that little independant artists will be able to survive on downloads?

Would you pay for a download if say, your friend had it already?
Coz I wouldn't, but I would have to buy a record, coz you can't copy that easily in a minute or two.

So, the money the artists are getting will be more than halfed at least, with hardly anything being made up for in download sales.

It will kill the independant music industry, but I'm sure the majors will continue to thrive.

I agree it makes the music much more accesible to a far wider audience, but that's no good if only a fraction of the people are going to end up paying for it.

And I agree that there's not enough bottom end in downloads, but the quality is improving

I think the most use it has is for DJs and artists wanting to test tracks out without having to get 50-100 vinyl copies made, masters etc which is an expensive process, so as a tool for producers it's invaluble, but it should be seen as such and not as an alternative to vinyl - vinyl should never be phased out.

    Now I've finished me rant - :D :D

That's a terrible mullet, must have spent too much time hanging round in germany or something
