    Operation Carthage

More than 20 suspected criminals were arrested today in drugs raids as teams of police officers swooped early this morning.

Around 120 police targeted 19 homes in the west end of Newcastle in a bid to weed out heroin and cocaine dealers in the city.

Officers arrested 22 people and seized drugs with a street value of almost £7,000, including what is believed to be a consignment of crack cocaine.

The raids, code name Operation Carthage, was the culmination of nine months of work involving Northumbria Police, a council drugs action team and local residents.

Police say the arrests are putting the city one step closer to eradicating drug suppliers from the streets.

Det Chief Insp Bob Pallas of the force's crime team north said: "Today saw 22 arrests at 19 addresses in the west end of the city. After searches we have got £1,215 worth of heroin, £1,435 of cocaine, £990 of ecstasy, £130 of cannabis and a small quantity of viagra.

"We have also recovered what we believe is crack cocaine but we cannot be positive until we have the results back from the laboratory. If it is, then this has an approximate street value of £2,800.

"We have made arrests for people conspiring to supply Class A drugs. We hope we have dismantled the drugs network in the west of the city and this will enable drug addicts to seek the help they need."

He added: "Following months of intelligence and evidence gathering we are now seeking the arrest of those we believe are dealing in heroin and cocaine.

"Intelligence suggested a disproportionate number of heroin street dealers in the west end of Newcastle.

"We hope today's operation will have a massive impact within this community, reducing crime and the availability of Class A drugs like this.

"But this is only the start. Enforcement on its own does not work without education and treatment and our partners will now be involved in helping drug users affected by this operation."

Coun John O'Shea, chairman of Newcastle drugs action team, said: "We are pleased the police are working to tackle the drugs situation in Newcastle and we are working closely with them.

"We are also making sure treatment is available for anyone affected by this operation."

Saw this on the news... i'm not gonna kick up a fuss if it gets rid of the heroin dealers... a very hypocrital view point on my part considering I feel it is ok to use one drug but not another...

£7000 worth is f*ck all in terms of a city the size of Newcastle. They've hardly smashed the drug circle

    Re: Operation Carthage

Drug addicts have always been fucking able to come away from drugs and seek help, now instead of beating people up for money they're just going to beat the shit out of metro-goers until you give them a dealers number.
