Pentagon tells Bush Climate change could bring war, anarchy famine, death

.... so what does Bush do? He suppresses the report for 4 months because its not what he want people to hear, especially after he has said that the US economy cannot afford Kyoto, it's probably not needed anyway and climate change may not actually exist!

    http://observer.guardian.co.uk/international/story/0,6903,1153513,00.html

    some quotes:

"An imminent scenario of catastrophic climate change is 'plausible and would challenge United States national security in ways that should be considered immediately', they conclude. As early as next year widespread flooding by a rise in sea levels will create major upheaval for millions."

"'You've got a President who says global warming is a hoax, and across the Potomac river you've got a Pentagon preparing for climate wars. It's pretty scary when Bush starts to ignore his own government on this issue,' said Rob Gueterbock of Greenpeace."

"Symons, who left the EPA in protest at political interference, said said the Bush administration's close links to high-powered energy and oil companies was vital in understanding why climate change was received sceptically in the Oval Office. 'This administration is ignoring the evidence in order to placate a handful of large energy and oil companies,' he added."

"Already, according to Randall and Schwartz, the planet is carrying a higher population than it can sustain. By 2020 'catastrophic' shortages of water and energy supply will become increasingly harder to overcome, plunging the planet into war."

"The report was commissioned by influential Pentagon defence adviser Andrew Marshall, who has held considerable sway on US military thinking over the past three decades.... Marshall, 82, is a Pentagon legend who heads a secretive think-tank dedicated to weighing risks to national security called the Office of Net Assessment. Dubbed 'Yoda' by Pentagon insiders who respect his vast experience, he is credited with being behind the Department of Defence's push on ballistic-missile defence."

    told you so :p

Totally and utterly shocking .... As much as i think the "concequence theories" are somewhat overkill in how they picture the world turning into a scene out of Mad Max,... its utterly mental to think that governments arent putting legislation in place to reduce our dependancy on oil NOW so in 10-15 years time we wont be up the creek without a paddle.

    AAAAARGH!!!!!!

You and dubya can keep your heads buried in the sand, Spence, as for me I'm getting worried bout stuff like this, overpopulation, dwindling fossil fuels, losing the Gulf Stream etc etc

How have I been dumped with Dubya?

I am just pointing out that this info is from the Pentagon, these are the same clowns who told Bushy about Iraqs invisible weapons of mass destruction.

Just watching Discovery Nature fills me with concern.. i saw the thing bout the gulf stream... and so many other various things that are potentially going to happen to this planet...

i dont think it's a case of IF it happens... it's WHEN it happens.

We've fucked with nature for way too long... and sooner or later nature will fight back - and it will win.

There is no way we will change in time either - at least not enough to make a difference. In my humble opinion we dont stand a fucking chance, and to be honest, as a race - we deserve this shit... we've fucked with mother nature - and she is inevitably going to show us how fucking stupid an idea that was.

    :(

Having done environmental courses for the past 4-5 years I have learned that there is still no concrete evidence to once and for all prove global warming is a real process... I personally believe it is fact but the Earth has been subject to changes in temperature for eons... its the rate of temperature increase that makes the current rise alarming, however there are people who believe it is the Earth returning to an equilibrium after the ice ages. Its a tough one to call none the less.

Bush actually wont accept climate change, not just global warming.

It is my understanding that outside of CFC's the majority of green house gasses are naturally occuring, we just churn out even more of them with cars and live stock, etc. however with something as fragile as the earths eco-system, the slightest change can have huge reprecusions.

A great example of this is after the 911 wt attacks... The vast majority of flights were grounded for around 3 days, during this time the climate was dramatically effected, the temprature rose by 2 degrees Fahrenheit.

Now if something as insignificant as aircrafts can trigger these effects - I find ti hard to believe that we have no other effects on the climate.

I don't know if global warming is fact or fiction, but logic suggests that man does have a big impact on the climate.

But.... this is just more scare tactics from the powers that be, the only good news is these scare tactics could hopefully damage bush's relection chances :D

Very good point about the WTC attacks... the long term environmental consequences of 9/11 are disasterous to say the least. The government allowed workers back into Lower Manhattan when there were still larges quanties of asbestos, lead, furans etc in the atmosphere and dust layers. This was all covered over until recently... it won't be a surprise if there are extremely high cases of cancer in the people who attempted to stabalise the site in the aftermath and the workers who returned around Sep 17th. Rudy Guilliano will have a lot to answer for.

The 'dustbowl' effect of the disaster will raise temperatures in a simalar way to a volcano or another huge explosion. Man has disasterous effects on the environment but current geo-politics (mainly involving oil) will pretty much guarantee sustained negative environmental processes.

Renewables are a perfectly viable option... but the politics, implementation and economic side effects are far too much for governments to bear. :)

renewable fuels are far more likely to topple governments than natural disasters... the energy giants are possibly the most powerful forces on the planet - if this balance of power is changed - the effects could be disasterous.

This balance is already starting to change, china and russia are looking set over take the west and middle eats for oil control... should be interesting to watch the effects this has on global politics :D
