Plans to tackle the Boy Racer culture

Gota say i'm all for the general idea of this but I think that some of the proposals are seriously flawed.

The most recent case that's had alot of media attention is where 2 lads were racing eachother, crashed, and 4 girls died.

Of course this is a tragic waste, and naturally the parents want something done about it.

But the father is saying that its the age of the drivers that needs to have something done (i think he said 21) - and yet, the drivers in the crash in which his daugter died were 22 and 24 - so obviously the age made no difference there.

Plus, I think it's very harsh to take away the right to drive to anybody under the age of 21 - although deaths are high it still surely is a minority of tossers that are causing these problems. Plus, whos to say they are going to be all sensible just because they are older? This crash proves this not to be the case....although it's fair to say that a fair proportion is down to these young lads trying to show off!

I'd certainly be gutted if i couldnt learn to drive becuase of it.

I think that a far better plan would be to introduce more deterrants. At the minute - you can get 6 points within 2 years, and you lose your licence...thats not much. I think instant bans (or perhaps "2 strikes and your out") for certain offences, eg dangerous driving, within say 2 or 3 years, would be a much better deterrant - wouldnt stop the problem but it would definitely help. Also, if you cause an accident as a result of one of these worse offenses...you dont get insured, etc....stuff like that.

    Any thoughts on this?

I think something like the french system where you have to drive at least 1000km before you're allowed to apply for your test should also be introduced. Experience can't be taught overnight... And a ban on any non-TUV approved mod's Bye Bye fibreglass snowplows...

tbh i think its unavoidable, every1 as soon as they pass there test needs 6month to boot the madness out of there system.

maybe a restriction the bhp of a car that a newbie can purchase??

Good idea for the experience...non approved mods is a bad one though..to what extent is that??

To what extent are the number of parts avaliable not approved?

About 80% of them aren't approved in any kind of way. TUV approval cost something like £20k for a headlight, so you'd need to either increase the cost of each part to suit. Cheapo halfords 'universal' backbox: £120. TUV approved backbox £280...

I'm doubt barry wouldn't like that....

All new car parts are subject to approval so why shouldn't aftermarket parts be subject to the same conditions...

It's not fair that an 18-21 year old would be expected to pay full taxes and be judged as an adult for there crimes but not allowed to learn to drive.

It would also limit were 18-21 year olds could be employed.

What if you are buying decent parts though? Like say i got some hella lights and a miltek exhaust for my golf, which is quality stuff, would this not be approved? I would assume so since it costs a load anyway lol

Give each city a race track funded by Lottery money, anyone that wants a car for anything other than getting from A - B can take their car to the track and thrash the shit out of it there

What would that achieve though? You could still drive 70 in a 20 or 30 zone.

Ive read they were trying to develop a SAT NAV related clocking system though that would limit your speed dependent on the area your in but that would be years away. The SAT NAV technology aint reliable enough at the moment.

Often it's the slow drivers or middle lane hoggers on the motorways that cause the trouble.

You can drive 85+ on the M74 quite safely for example.
