Stuff like this really screws my head A professor in America is planning to send a message back in time. So, surely he can't possibly be successful, because if, say, someone in the eighties had received a message from this guy then they'd know about it today, so the 'experiment' will be a guaranteed success. But, seeing as no one has ever received a message from someone in the future (at least I've never heard of it happening!), then it's obvious the experiment's a guaranteed failure. So has it already worked? Or is it going to fail? And will Marty end up pulling his Mam in the fifties? :spangled:
Re: Stuff like this really screws my head how do you know its not happened? People are considered mentally ill if they say they recieve messages that defy common beliefs plus he hasnt sent the message yet so how can the person in the past know about it You experience basic time travel (i.e. viewing past events) every second of the day
in order to time travel you obviously need two gates. one on this plain, and another on another time plain. its a given that you cant travel further back than the moment second gate was created, therefore you cant go and stop hitler being born, or go and see the dinosaurs. you can only go to the moment the second gate was created, otherwise where would you come out ?
Re: Re: Stuff like this really screws my head Well I'm guessing he'd have probably sent it to himself, rather than some random who would have then been sectioned. But as soon as the message is sent, then it's there as an event that's happened in the past, so the recipient would know about it now and should have known about it from time of receipt up until. So if he sends it then it obviously already hasn't worked, even though he hasn't sent it yet. Read this on another board as well: :spangled: This is way too much thinking for a friday afternoon
why did i get involved in this I think there are a few factors to consider here: What format is the message sent in? Is he using the same device to send/recieve? He would have to set it so he recieves the message in the future because if he sets it to recieve at the present then he wont ever get the message because a message cannot be delivered to the present because it has already past?
What set of time rules will he be using for the experiment? This is the upmost important aspect of time travel. Will he be playing by Back To The Future rules or terminator rules?
One thing is planning to do it, another is actually doing it. Anyone can say they're going to go back in time. No one knows if it's possible, it's like 100 year ago when someone said "everything that's gonna be invented already has". Then we invented the post it note.
just had my head battered in work then i come on here and get sucked into reading this lol instant headfuck haha
The Arrows of Time theory - Cup falls from table and breaks, but broken cups never re- assemble themselves spontaneously. In the expanding Universe at large, the future is the direction of time in which galaxies are further apart. That would mean that if and when the expansion of the Universe were to reverse, then the everyday arrow of time would also reverse, with broken cups re-assembling themselves.
