Police hunting a sexual predator who snatched a six-year-old from her bath are today probing the death of a man found hanged in a flat nearby.

The discovery of a 30-year-old man's body in a ground-floor rented flat in Bewicke Road, Willington Quay, North Tyneside, is being investigated by a team of officers.

Forensic searches of the flat, which is owned by a private company boss who is currently in Australia, and DNA evidence gathered at the scene of the abduction are being analysed.

A red car was taken away from the flat by officers.

Police said it is too early to say if the discovery of the man's body will end the hunt for the girl's abductor.

Two men lived at the flat were named locally as Lee Bailey and Neil Sullivan, although police have not named the dead man.


It is understood the death was reported at around 4.30pm yesterday. Police launched a full forensic examination at the scene.


A police spokesman said: "We are investigating the circumstances involving the death of a 30-year-old man in the close proximity to the scene of where a six-year-old girl was abducted from her home."


Detectives involved in the hunt for the sex attacker had been informed of the development.


The youngster was seized from her bath on December 27 in a "sexually motivated" attack, driven around Wallsend for about 15 minutes, then dumped in the snow, naked, bleeding and crying in Armstrong Road.


The flat was sealed off and forensic officers dressed in white suits combed the house.


Neighbours reported bags of belongings being taken away. They also said a red Ford Escort had been towed away from outside the property.


The police spokesman said: "We have responded to a report of a sudden death in Willington Quay.


"The death is not being treated as suspicious at this stage."


Police hunting the girl's attacker had said the man they were looking for had driven a red car.


At 11.20pm a body was removed from the flat.


Det Chief Insp Jim Napier, who is leading the investigation, also released a description given by the girl, which said the man may have had sideburns or been unshaven.


Last night, neighbours described a man they had seen at the flat where the body was found as in his 20s to 30s, about 5ft 4in to 5ft 6in and skinny with black hair and distinctive black sideburns.


Neighbour Lynn Wickenden, 46, said: "I spoke to a lad over Christmas.


"He was young, perhaps in his twenties or thirties. He had black hair, was about 5ft 4 inches tall and had sideburns. He was quite thin and skinny.


"Before this, it was a friendly area. I have been here for seven years and there has never been any serious trouble of any kind.


"The lad lives in a house that had been converted into flats. I think they are all owned by the same landlord. The police arrived at about 4.30pm and an ambulance came down at the same time."


A neighbour who did not want to be named said: "There are two people who live in the building and one had black hair with heavy sideburns.


"I saw them a couple of weeks ago getting out of the red car when they pulled up outside the flats with their shopping.


"My girlfriend said `hello' and they seemed OK. I have never said anything else to them.


"I hope this is the man who abducted the little girl because it will end the uneasy atmosphere the incident has caused."


Dad-of-one Colin Brown, 37, a kitchen porter, who lives doors away from the house where the body was found, said: "I hope the culprit is dead. That is what he deserves.


"If this is the paedophile who took the six-year-old girl then it is a good thing that he is dead.


"The area has been so different since the abduction happened. If it turns out the dead man is the paedophile, then this could put an end to it all.


"Last night there were loads of police in the street, then the forensic guys turned up in white suits.


"The man who lived in the flat had a red car and that was always parked outside, but that has been taken away by police.


"He moved in only weeks ago. The flats had been gutted by a fire and the landlord had just finished refurbishing them. I went to look at the flat this man was in but he got it. That was under a month ago.


"He never came out of the flat. I live nearby and I never saw him. His car was always parked outside but he hardly used it."


Gordon Lawrie, 32, a security manager, said: "I hope this is the paedophile, but if it is, he has got the easy way out.


"It seems too much of a coincidence that the abduction took place only a few streets away, then the body is found in this house."


Catherine O'Railly, 20, said: "I have a six-month-old baby girl called Millie. I was so frightened after the abduction took place that I stayed at a relative's house away from here when my partner was working in Milton Keynes for a few days.


"There are always kids playing in the street here, but not anymore. Everyone is terrified and I hope this death brings an end to it all."




Innocent till proven guilty but i can not believe he'd do that he has kids of his own

As i say he was a father himself but i know he had loads of shit with his ex which is what i think it may be over tbh

You are so true. You have no idea what people can be capable of. Im glad he is dead if he did it.

Lets just hope his kids are ok, this could ruin their lives through no fault of their own.
