Sven vath - 30 something djs: move on!

Germany's legendary superstar DJ Sven Vath chatted to Skrufff this week and sparked controversy by claiming most 30-something DJs should find other careers.

"If you haven't made it as a DJ by the time you're 35 you should quit," Sven suggested, "Because the young ones are waiting."

"What I mean by "making it' is making it to the big time," the 40 year old techno pioneer explained. "What I see happening right now is that the market for middle class (middle level- Ed) DJs in particular is diminishing; the top class DJs and the low class DJs will still be around, but it's going to be increasingly hard for the middle class DJs to survive," he predicted.

"If you're a middle class DJ and you're 33 or 34 years old and you can't see the light at the end if the tunnel, ie that something is going to explode in the next two or three years, then you should think about having another job as well," he added.

As well as DJing, producing and running various record labels, the massively successful star runs Ibiza superclub Cocoon and has also recently opened a Cocoon club in his hometown of Frankfurt, and stressed that he believes diversification is essential for DJs hoping to survive.

"Some DJs out there are only DJs and it's important to do other things as well as DJing," he advised.

"If you're only DJing the day will come when it all finishes and- phew, it's not that easy. This is my opinion," he concluded.

Sven Vath in the Mix- the Sound of the Fifth Season, is out now on Cocoon Recordings.

Yeah mate I got it. Didn't I email you to let you know it arrived? How rude of me!

Had a little skim through - aint had a proper listen yet, hence no feedback. The bits that I heard had some nice sounds going on. Think it more than likely will be my thing from what i've heard so far!

What does he mean by middle level as i am low level does that mean i'm ok at 35.

I bet he consider's himself a top level dj.

Are you in town in the next couple of days to get those tunes from you.

Have got a stomache infection so can not venture far at the moment.

    Are you joking?!

The bloke is a legend and still going strong.

I kinda see what he's saying...if you got to 35 and you still haven't "made it" as a DJ you probably aren't going to. But that's a generalisation and there are always exceptions to the rules.

DJ's are getting younger and younger IMO and most of the tipped "next big things" are barely into their 20's...then again, I suppose you could flip the coin and ask the question will these 20-year-old DJ's still be going strong in 15 years time...?!

I also agree that DJ's who just DJ's are a thing of the past. Unless your shit hot you really gotta be producing or promoting as well...

Don't think age as got anything to do with it i know i have a much wider and better taste in music than i did when i was twenty.

I think its all about passion for music and you can have that at any age.
With stuff like trance and Hard House i think maybe you would not have the same passion at 35 as music is not that deep more made for having it nights hence the young crowd.

Think the young age thing is a gimick set up by mixmag most big dj's are in there thirty's as this have given there musical taste and production time develop

Agree with the production and promote comment though.

Think he's been pretty weak for a few years to be honest.

I'd like to know what exactly he defines as middle-class and also what constitutes 'making it'.

Agree with the production comment too. It helps.

I see what he's trying say but at the same time alot of older DJ's are still booked on their past glories and are actually pretty rubbish now - Marshall Jefferson springs to mind.

Jefferson was lethal, production-wise - have some killer stuff from him 87/89. Dunno about his DJ'ing - never heard owt old from him.

Dezza May's DJ'ing is weird. He can be lethal or he can play rubbish Latin noise.

Saunderson is just party techno now. One Intec record after another. Shame.

    Old Detroit/Chi - yeah mate I do...
