    The Day Britain Stopped

Quite topical with today's Metro strike

On BBC2 last night. A made-up story done in a documentary style showing how easily Britain could be brought to a standstill causing a disaster.
Basically a series of events coming together - a National Rail Strike on the Friday before Xmas, crashes on the motorway bringing the whole motorway system to gridlock. People dying in their cars from hypothermia cos they'd spent so long in their car. On top of that a plane crash over London due to congestion at Heathrow.

Quite scary and freaky the way they did it

Was that the thing that was on a while ago too? I kinda remember it. Think I only saw part of it tho.

Did it involve a family wanting to get to the airport in time for a flight or sumthing?

Yeah think its been on before. They were interviewing loads of people in the past tense who were telling their story. If you tuned in halfway through, you would have thought it was real for a bit cos they kept putting fake news bulletins on!

Admittedly the plane crash was unlikely but the motorway gridlock wasn't too farfetched. The snow wasn't the reason it came to a standstill, the roads already were then at night it got much colder which caused the deaths.

I think they were just trying to illustrate how much of a strain there is on the roads and how much we rely on them.
    Good programme

Doesn't sound too different to what happened during the fuel blockades. It only took a couple of lorries to block the depots and suddenly the supermarkets didn't have any food left on their shelves.

Personally i wouldnt want to live in London anyways, it's far to crowded - containing 43% of the worlds most crowded households, it also contains one in four of the country's homeless and 40% of all asylum seekers coming into the country head for London. Not to mention that London contains 13 of the country's poorest boroughs and that London's population is prejected to grow by 700,00 over the next 20 years, the equivalent of a city the size of Leeds.

There was something like that on a yr or 2 ago, about how easily a deadly disease could be transmitted and spread round the country in days. It was made exactly how you's have said with news bulletins etc. Scary really. :(

Anything! :( It's for the synoptic exam which you usually do in June but I'm doing it this month and its about some pointless town called Haugesund and Karmoy on the West coast of Norway. You're not meant to go and find out more information than they've given you in the pre-release material but I mightaswell :D

And on that thing about the program a couple of years back about the disease...it was smallpox. Made by the same people as "The Day Britain Stopped" (I think its BBC Bristol), I've saw both of them and I loved them, great 'fake documentaries' :D

Hmm...I really should be revising for my biology exam on Thursday...:spangled:

Just make it all up. It worked for me with my coursework for Geography. In fact, I'd have failed the course if it wasn't as good! The number of foreign tourists who are willing to stand and do surveys that you find in Durham is amaaaaaaaaaazing! :D

  I decided to do my coursework on my nearby shops!! Four Lane Ends shops if anyone's ever visited them! And I did the surveys on a freezing cold day in November when no-one wanted to stop and answer questions about whether they thought the pavements were good quality or not!

So yes, I made all my questionnaires up! All 62 of them!

Just remembered sitting with an atlas with my eyes closed and randomly picking out countries the tourists flock to Durham from....

Think I did about 100 questionnaires like this...just to be safe! :D

General studies is the most pointless course EVER! I somehow managed to get 100% in the maths (oh sorry "application of number") and "application of ICT" exams! I only needed about 20marks in the English one to get an A so I started ranting on about Tony Blair and the crap government  I got my A!

But then....Universities couldn't give a shit about General Studies! Just puts more pressure on us students

I've got biology notes all over my toilet walls lol....believe me I don't need any more sources of revision! Thanks anyway :D
