The Sirens Hi everyone, I thought some of you might be interested to hear that there's a new female R&B / Pop group from Newcastle called The Sirens coming your way and they've been hotly tipped as the new All Saints!! Their new single and album is due out in August so you can expect to hear a lot more about the in the coming weeks and months. For the single, I've done an upbeat house / club mix with a slightly electro / acid feel and there's also an electro breaks mix and a tougher, more dubby club mix to go with the original urban mix if you don't like R&B. At the moment, only the original urban mix and the Smashing Pumpkins bootleg mix are up on the website at the mo, but the others will be coming soon and are worth checking out. Here's a bit of info about the girls. Remember where you heard it first... ‘Post All Saints, the British music industry has been searching for a photogenic, close harmonizing, all female group as obviously sussed and talented as Shaznay and co. (The Sunday Times, Jan ‘04) ‘There hasn’t been an English girl group this fly since All Saints and their forthcoming single ‘Baby (off the wall)’ has gotta be one of the hottest tunes around’ (Blues & Soul, May ’04) ‘Move over Destiny’s Child it’s about time we had a girl group like this’ (Gay Times, Apr ‘04) The Sirens are set to storm the charts and airwaves across the UK this summer with their infectious new single Baby (Off The Wall). Penned by The Sirens and DC Joseph, ‘Baby (Off The Wall)’ is a devastating funked-up fusion of R&B and hip-hop with tight vocals, thumping beats and catchy melodies. Think Prince meets Missy Elliott meets All Saints, all melted in to one mouth-watering pot, served with a satisfying slice of Sirens style. After circulating in the underground and doing the damage around clubs across the globe, ‘Baby’, is now ready to be unleashed onto the rest of the world. Kitchenware Records have had the single remixed for commercial release by Bacon & Quarmby (Sugababes, Jamieson, Shaznay Lewis) and the package comes complete with an array of impressive remixes. First up Paul Lancaster (Sabotage, Climax, CP Recordings, Red Ant) delivers the Fragile Club mix – a smooth and classy house mix with summery vibes and groovy percussion . Assquake (Alan X & Stephka) tear ‘Baby’ up turning it into a breakbeat monster with the vocal mix and taking it down a hypnotic electro-house route with the dub. Last but not least Kaywan (Realists) have come up with a bass heavy urban mix. A bit of background… Newcastle, while not commonly associated with the hip hop or R&B scene, is home to Sirens, a feisty four-piece female group whose shared love of hip hop and R & B brought them together. Karina Brians, Kat Haslam, Lea Cummings and Lynsey Schofield cite their biggest influences as Motown, Missy Elliott, Prince, Jay Z and NERD. Best friends Karina Brians and Kat Haslam formed Sirens in 2001. A mutual friend introduced Lea and Lynsey to the girls and the definitive line up of Sirens was formed. ‘Dedicated’ is a word that doesn’t even come close to describing this young, dynamic foursome. Determined to take Sirens (taken from the temptresses of Greek mythology) to the next level, the girls quickly went from hiring out local rehearsal rooms to tearing out ‘production studio’ ads from the Yellow Pages to two members actually selling their cars to fund a hopeful trip to the big smoke! It was in Newcastle that Sirens came together with producers DC Joseph (Wayne McDonald & Dex Nicholson). The six of them immediately hit it off and together they created the Sirens sound.
