The Smoking Ban: One Month On.

Just been watching Richard & Judy and they had an interesting little piece on the smoking ban a month down the line.

There were 2 Pub Landlords on basically kicking off against it but I thought their reasons were canny mad. They were basically stating their pubs have "completely lost their atmosphere" due to the ban.

Richard was saying that one of his mates "doesn't like going to the pub anymore because he can't get into any decent conversions with his friends as they always have to stop their conversation for someone to go for a tab, and when a person leaves it ruins the conversation and they can't get back into it"

Both the landlords agreed with this point and stated that the majority of their patrons echoed his sentiment. I personally found that point utterly ridiculous. I smoke socially and in know way has the smoking ban ruined mine and my mates crack when we've been in the pub. If taking a tab break "ruins your conversations" then you've got issues imo.

What does everybody think of this?

I actually agree with that point.

I hate when mates fuck off for a tab, it does actually kill the conversation somewhat

I think people should question their own social skills and addiction to nicotine and how it affects those .... before i blame the smoking ban.

Is it any different to someone nipping off to get a drink, play a fruit machine, go for a jimmy riddle .... or some sahara nuts?

Never thought of it from the point of a non-smoker.

This is also some good points.. I play on bandits too much when im with friends and i feel like a right cunt for doing it at times.

    Something ive gotta stop doing!

goin for a piss is different. Something about just NEEDING a tab when people are having a fun chat just annoys me, but this is probably cos i dont have the addiction i guess

    Exactly.:)

Tbh I've barely even noticed the difference at all (apart from the smell obviously) but then I suppose I don't go out drinking with many smokers.

Nah i was only messing. But i think if you went out with people who spoke regularly, you would notice that it kinda kills the mood mid conversation cos they come back and ask what they missed etc

Its fine in pubs but proper guff in clubs.

They stink and it ruins the atmosphere of the place when half the dancefloor have to leave every 20 minutes

I certainly aint smoking less, I was standing out in the absolute pissing rain on Saturday night, proper tab junkie

overall though i dont think its been as bad as people were making out initially.

people realise they love their drink too much to dodge pubs!

I actually agree with the 'atmosphere' point....

Alot of the pubs where i live have lost the atmosphere they had... ok if ya friends do smoke.... it does make the the night disjointed if they nip off for a tab here and there.

There are now large groups of people outside pubs rather than inside....

Just seems like its clearly divided the places.... even the places that provide outdoor smoking areas are busier than actually indoors on the main area!

Sorry Sir, I was typing quickly and didn't realise.

For your information I have heard of GRAMMER.

Loved the fact this critical point came from a man who doesn't COMMAS to properly structure a sentence, or a QUESTION MARK at the end of a question.

Oh, and you spelt GRAMMAR wrong.

I cant decide whether I like it or not, some nights its a proper task and some nights out I enjoy going outside for a smoke and a bit crack with randoms. Will probably be a bit shitty in the winter like, not that we've had much of a summer. Has anyone quit since it came in?

i quit for about 2 weeks prior to the ban but it doesnt help at all having a social tab with a drink as im pretty much fully back on the tabs. i like goin outside when its nice , especially when the terraces/gardens are equiped with high powered heaters! :D

it really fucking pisses me off, though I think the thing that's pissing me off the most is the lack of flexibility / attempts to accomodate people to be able to smoke and drink at the same time in clubs.

been out to the cosmic ballroom and red rooms since the ban, and both of them you have to leave your drink inside when you go out and stand on the pavement for a fag. I want to have a smoke with my drink, not have a drink, then have a fag, then have a drink etc. Plus at the red rooms someone nicked a full pint while I was outside smoking.

The red rooms has 2 big archways either side of it that lead through to the market on one side & the road on the other, they could easily have made it so that people could drink and smoke in the archway at night while the market's closed, but despite it having a 12 foot wide, 15 foot high arch at one end for ventilation it's still classed as being indoors so you have to go out onto the pavement to smoke and leave your drink behind.

Basically if we actually had some clubs with outdoor areas it'd be ok, as it is it's just taken the fun out of the night for me and I'm just waiting to get back to someone's house where we can relax properly and have a drink and a smoke at the same time.

was also quite funny watching dj murphy try to get his head round the idea of a 2 hour set without smoking the other night when he usually goes through at least a 20 pack in a set. He did way better than me, I sacked it off after an hour and got someone to cover for me while I went for a fag - though the backroom was fairly dead, whereas the main room was rammed.

    </end rant>
