Trance these days? Whats the current state of trance these days, release wise? Still far too many vocals and epic tracks, .... or are dj's and labels toning it down a bit and concentrating on less obvious sounding tunes that work well together instead of going for cheap thrills? The GTR mix on here was quite good - not a single vocal to be found and better for it. ... I even liked the Randy Katana one Almost felt like how eddie halliwell should have STAYED instead of this HH/Techno garbage thing he does. Best trance mix this year for me has to be Jon O Bir's essential mix for me - probably the only thing i'd look forward to hearing in a club. That Tiesto mix from last week lasted all of 60 seconds before i binned it though - Sounds like he's rehashing the same old shit from years ago. Whats YOUR take on the state of trance music this year?
Personally i think armins sound is fresh and is exactly what i want to hear from a Trance Dj Agreed about Haliwell, he was mint in 2002/2003 then he has turned gash
From what I have heard (albeit not much) , the synths, beats , basslines and general structure of Trance songs just hasnt changed since the massive boom back in 98/99. If you look at house music for example , the sounds being used today are completely different than they were 7 years ago. Alot of other dance music has evolved but trance seems to have remained the same.
i've gone off trance of late, still like the occasional song as i do with every genre, but dont class it as anywhere near my favourite form of dance. Theirs not enough you can do with it, with house etc you can mix styles up easily and they'll all fit, you can't with trance without being called random. The production is spot on, it hasnt changed and probably wont but the producers themselves are good at what they do personally i dont dislike it, just wouldn't buy records as it doesn't have the same appeal as it used to, theirs not enough variation and i prefer music that i can sit back and enjoy mixing
trance sounds all samey because the djs YOU LOT are only prepared to turn out and see are big name a-listers who are playing the same stuff they been doing for 3 years now. to be quite honest it is also very worrying the amount of clone like house nights on the go in newcastle at the mo. The only 3 things i rate are resistance which caters for anything suono which is something different and some of the techno stuff the freaky dancing lot do
dont know anything about freaky dancing. But resistance is easliy one of the best laces to play at, theres no cocks and you can play straight up spotter tunes all night.
therell be a few c**ks at the fiddler on saturday , oh and si quicks but crack dancing in tim to all the non obvious classics he is NOT going to play EAT STATIC at freaky in feb has been my fave gig this year
My view of trance atm is that there are far too many small labels and even some of the larger ones that are just signing any old shit. The standard for a track to be good enuff to be signed has dropped in the last 18months significantly and its leaving the entire genre overun with mediocre crap. I mean ive had a couple of my tracks played in clubs and internet radio and stuff but i really dont think its good enuff to be signed to a label, but some of these other young producers seem to be hell bent on gettin their crap signed and more to the point the labels are actually doing it. Other than that there is the problem already mentioned that no fucker will get off their arse to go see anyone other than the big 3 and maybe a couple of their personal fav djs usually matt hardwick and some1 else. How is trance supposed to evolve if the clubbers will only plough their money into people who have been around for ages. There is innovation in the genre and there is plenty of talent, the problem is that by and large it just gets overlooked. At the moment these talented people trying to push the bounderies of trance are just going to end up segregated into yet another sub genre of trance. Until the labels, the clubbers and the promoters all pull their heads out their arses and bring some new talent through (though when i say talent i mean proper talent not just some random who can piece together a track and can mix a couple of records, like myself) then the genre is just going to slowly decline into the hole its making for itself. Edit : it all sounds a bit morbid that! There are still plenty of good points to things going on atm, theres some good smaller nights coming through all over the country and although it takes longer to sift through the crap there is still plenty of excellent tracks to be heard.
Simply if u go and c the likes of Armin, Hardwick & O'Bir ul get the very best of the uplfifting and euphoric sides of trance and have a great night out. I think the other big names like Tiesto and PVD arnt wot they were. Either this is due 2 the lack of quality productions or simply becuase they are disinteresrted as DJ's. The harder techier DJ's like Sander Van Doorn & Fred Baker are showing the way forward in terms of their production work. There is a lot of gash out there and unless u are into trance u will simply skim the surface and only see the bad side. But i have still had a very good years' clubbing so far and sum of the tunes that have came out have been up to standard but perhaps not as many as previous years. Its all a matter of opinion tbh.
