    Trance

After years of loving it I have to say I feel it is at its lowest at the moment.

I am no expert but every set I am going to see at the moment has no flow are structure at all. I used to love going to trance nights and how the djs built up the set.

Basically van dyk changed his style two years ago into more techy / banging fromm start to finish. Now I feel everyone is following this pattern too. Armin was doing this all night at armada and it was shite.

Maybe I am not changing with the times. But the sets I have seen recently are boring, repetitive and go nowhere:( :(

I like trance - and ive been listening to alot of it recently .... but make a special effort to see the same old names play a club where you can look forward to trance, then some trance, then a bit of trance, some harder trance and then a bit more trance - no thanks.

These 'im sick of trance' posts are a dime a dozen ... what makes you so special? Most people realised it was sounding very samey about 2-4 years ago.

Exactly, there's plenty of fantastic DJ's out there at the moment and some class productions right through from the proggy to the techy end of trance. All the best sets I've seen this year have been from DJ's not amongst the usual 'top 10' big names who tend to get most of the publicity.

Personally I'm loving the scene at the moment... :D

thats why i prefer nights with only 1 or maybe 2 guest Djs and the residents... decent residents awarm up, then 1 or 2 headliners to build their set properly

Seeing the usual crowd of say armin/hardwick/obir/askew/pvd all knocking out a peak time set 1 after another has no appeal - arena and even to an extent festivals aren't the way of clubbing - just fill it with the top main jocks... it's too much

If you want trance proper uplifting trance ala Armin 02 then you have to steer clear of the top DJs unfortunately.

All of the top DJs have changed their styles, for whatever reason it may be, they are getting bored (if you play the same style every day every week i can see how that happens) they want to reach out to new people, they want to investigate new elements of dance music, they want to make more money. Whatever the reason they have changed.

Armin - Was my fave trance DJ but over the last couple of years has changed his style quite drastically and plays more tech/chunky/commercial stuff (altho his ASOT shows still have plenty of great trance). For me his last trance was played at the end of 2004 Link. After this (amazing) CD we started seing random chunky stuff in his sets (e.g. he played the remix of Nirvana when i saw him NYE 2004-05) and its been downhill ever since.
While he may still play some great tracks I find that his sets have lost huge amounts of drive and momentum and he no longer blows my head off with great uplifting trance

Tiesto - Just listen to ISOS5, has changed his style to being much more housey/proggy and again while he still plays some great trance in his sets that is balanced out with stuff that doesnt appeal so much to the eipic/uplifting trance fan.

Ferry - Ferry Corsten has taken the electro path and his style is now electro trance and while he plays rocking sets imo they are a million miles away to sets hed be playing a while back. You only get a small proportion of old style Ferry tracks e.g. Galaxia, Above & Beyond - Good For Me (Darren Tate Remix)

PVD - As previously mentioned in this thread he has moved towards the tech trance end of the spectrum and plays little else in his sets than this, once again, you wont get an old style uplifting trance set, only little glimpses.

So the big 4 have all sadly moved away from the traditional trance sound, however there are still plenty of DJs who play that kind of stuff, namely...

    Andy Bagguley

    Menno de Jong

Above & Beyond - however often their sets lack drive/momentum

Matt Hardwick (although he is quite inconsistent)

    Mark Pledger

    Jon O'Bir

    Ronski Speed

    Will Holland

    Ian Betts

    etc, etc.

There are still Trance nights where you will hear great pure uplifting trance sets e.g...

    www.electronicsessions.co.uk

    http://www.dontstayin.com/parties/wildchild

They do still exisit, you just gotta steer away from the big names!
