    Valuing old records

Are there any good places online I could do this to get a general idea of their value? The majority of them are old punk and rock from late 50's-early 80's from my Dad with a few Beatles records and suchlike that I've been told are collectors items.

Only way to make any money is to sell em online. Asked a guy from alt.vinyl and he basically said record shops only offer you a 5th of what its value is. Only records that are worth a lot of money are really rare releases from really big acts like Pink Floyd, The Beatles, The Stones and Hendrix. There isn't a market for anything else.

really rare techno ones go for hundreds

your best bet is to find out if the copy you have was part of a limited pressing

I've got some Hangars Liquides stuff which is worth a good few bob.

Old coloured vinyl is sometimes worth a bit

There's a book called "rare record price guide" published by record collector every year or so (isbn 0-9532601-4-3 for the 2006 edition) which has pretty much all records worth something listed alpahbetically with their value if in mint condition.

It's quite hard to sell records of high value on the net though - places like ebay etc - as serious collectors generally won't pay a lot of money for something without seeing the condition of it themselves first. Although this isn't always the case
