Vinyl disappearing sooner than we think??

Two of the last eight companies making vinyl records in the UK ceased trading this week, suggesting the long term future for 12 inch records looks increasingly bleak.

London based companies Vinyl Magic and Alpha Magic who specialised in drum & bass and hardcore ‘collapsed into receivership’ (because of internet downloading, the Standard said, though their demise is also likely to be tied into the increasing number of professional DJs ditching vinyl for CDs or MP3 mixing.

Pete Tong admitted this week that CDs are now comprising at 85% of his DJ sets, while progressive house hero Sasha suggested this week that digital mixing could reinvigorate mainstream club culture.

“The idea of going to watch a DJ spinning two pieces of vinyl with a mixer is losing its shine, people are looking for something more,” he told the Independent.

“We’ve had 15 years of this dance culture, it needs something that is really going to put the wow factor around the DJ booth.”

Sasha continued his 15 year time-for-change theme in an interview with the BBC this week, suggesting clubbers are becoming more ‘open-minded’.

“It's interesting to see what Manumission are doing in their main room, putting on bands like Electric 6 and Franz Ferdinand in there rather than the big trance DJs,” said Sasha, “it's cool, it's evolving."

I personally didn't realise that there were so few companies in this country actually producing vinyls. Although I do think it'll be a sad day when the time does come that vinyl does disappear, it's been on the cards for years. Guess its just the way dance music, and indeed the music industry in general is progressing. I've certainly started playing off cd's a lot more often, since I'm finding that I have very little money to spend on vinyl now than I did when I first started djing, plus I'm starting to use a lot more digital download sites, where you can download tracks for just over £1!

Hardwick said this on his board:

"Im just going through the tunes Ive been mailed this week and for the first time ever they are all CDs...not one vinyl pressing.

    Times are changing."

As much as it pains me to say it, it's deffo true.

Given the recent surge of CD usage, I don't think it'll be particularly long until the trusty 1210 is tossed in the attic, to be raplaced with a shiny, brand new, multi functional masterpiece :(

I use quite a few CD in my sets, still love vinyl though  but it's on it's way out sadly :( not that I will be departing from vinyl all together :p

what with DJ's using the likes of Ableton live to mix live on PC the days of mixing one into another from a flight case are long gone, move with the times :)

I think this is a disgrace, if I'm honest.

A couple of years ago the same thing was said, and most people gave the reply "I'll never stop plaing vinyl, it's such a better format than CD". Lying bastards. I do play CDs, and always play a few in my set, but I think if I had all of the stuff that I have on CDR on wax, I'd play it more. I'm a die-hard vinyl enthusiast and if plastic becomes rare as hens' teeth, then I'm still going to play it...

Never really touched vinyl, but I love cd's... So much extra stuff that can be done, and so much rare music that can be played :)

I don't reckon vinyl's going to die out though, there's too big a die-hard fanbase.

personally I cant wait to get rid of my 1210´s.

If i had the money to buy another 2 cdjs and backup my existing vinyl onto cd i´d be laughing.

My only concern would be the 150 quid i spent on UDG record bags in the past year

tell me about it, what i do now is backup all the new vinyl i buy as soon as i get it, avoiding having to do it in one big-ass session.

What also pisses me off is when I get the settings wrong and the bloody recording clips the reds, then you have to re-record

I'm a vinyl diehard. Besides not being able to afford CDJ's, I like the feel of vinyl rather then putting something in a machine and pressing/turning some dials and buttons.:(

i agree completely, only stuff i play on cdr is "amateur" stuff that isn't on vinyl and will probably never make it to plastic. if i have the vinyl i will play it ahead of the cd, with a couple of exceptions like insigma - open our eyes where the vinyl jumps on the bassdrops in the break thru overuse lol
