    Volkswagen Scam

Just been sent this by my works IT Dept' - We're all probs used to this shit by now, but I thought I'd give you prior warning anyway!

    Volkswagen Scam (10/1/2006)

Internet users are warned of a spam campaign that pretends the recipient has won a lottery sponsored by the Volkswagen motor company

The messages claim that recipients have been chosen for a $1.7 million prize and a brand new VW car, advising that the user has been randomly chosen from more than 250,000 email addresses around the world. It then urges recipients not to tell anyone else of their win, but to quickly contact a prize transfer agent for further instructions, providing a phone number and email address for contact purposes.

The emails are a variant of the commonly encountered ‘Letter from Nigeria’ scams (also known as 419 Advanced Fee Fraud) which fool innocent users into believing that a large amount of money will be transferred into their bank account. Such scams are designed to steal information about the user’s bank account or demand a ‘handling fee’ for the money transfer.

This particular scam has stolen the name of one of the world’s most famous car companies in its attempt to steal people’s money and identities. Anyone who responds to these emails will never collect their prize money – or a new VW.

I know. That's why I said you all probably used to this shit. But they don't actually ask for your bank details initially, just a contact number and confirmation of your e-mail address they sent it too. It all looks legit too with the VW website and legal statements.

You would have to be thick as fuck to fall for it, but you do get some people who just aint got a clue though
