Wat have we got to show? Every generation before us has had quality memorable music... what have we got to show our kids? The Who, The Beatles, Michael Jackson, Sex Pistols, Rolling Stones, etc. We have fuck all the biggest thing to a stadium act we have is bloody oasis. Theres no fucking way I'm showing my grand kids "pvd - for an angel" its embarassing....
i'll have no shame in putting on 'techno T & mc g-force live from the colliseum 22/5/96' and explaining to my grandkids want went on there!! what has our generation given to music? orbital faithless underworld the chems massive attack. all groundbreaking artists/acts.
they may be groundbreaking but when u compare them to the genius of the who, the beatles or the sex pistols they're dwarfed. The dance revolution was before our time - if I wanted to showcase groundbreaking dance music I'd show them marshall jeferson or maybe even early hip hop acts like grandmasterflash. But I do think our generation has a pretty feeble showcase of artists in comparisson to previous generations... the 60's and 70's had hundreds of amazing acts (from zappa to dylon)
Paly them the Squarepusher edit of Joy Division love will tear us apart and they'll relise what genious is!!!!
perhaps the reason we havent got any thing to 'show the grandkids' as u put it joe is because there is only so much u can do before u have to start to re-hash old ideas look at oasis...massive band but just a re-hash of oasis also man of the moment mr timberlake...as big as he is gunna get he is just jacko all over again theres only so much u can do with the same old notes and sounds, if that makes sense
there was nothing to hate about the colliseum!!! i do believe mr tulip once upon a time graced the turntables there.
Mate our generation's contribution is the cultural revolution that is Rave Culture and Acid House. Like everything, it maybe didn't become the huge social change over needed to sort out the 80's but we now all talk to each other a little easier, and we can all dance together, however we like on a fairly broad scale. 20 years ago you would have got a glass in your face. Artists by and large became faceless and we celebrated the medium - the DJ - not specifically the music. That's a fucking big shift of focus. I'd show 'em Larry Lavan, Afrika Bambaataa, Frankie Knuckles, Ron Hardy, Kool Herc, Mike Pickering, Danny Rampling, Paul Oakenfold. The list is huge. These are our generation's musical legends.
It was only DJ NRG I hated!!! I loved Double Trouble (Selector C & Techno T) & The Techno Taskforce (Full Effect & Attack) but my favourite colli DJ was Jason Bushby.
Well u just have 2 hope that your gran kids grow up2 listen 2 Trance etc!!! Other than that hide the CD player when they come round
