Hated it .... moreso cause the job was rubbish The beer is great, and some parts of it like the Grand Place are really nice - but ive found it very laid back to the point of being outright boring (friday nights feel like newcastle city centre on a bank holiday in the middle of the nineties recession). ... Way too many poor/shabby areas as well which is really wierd for a capital. I suppose im more used to London/Newcastle/Barcelona type experiences for big city nightlife. There are some nice places though - and the food/drink is really good. Just having to work here took the shine off it. Duvel is not to be messed with!
6 of those on an empty stomach one night (drunk slowly 'continental style) had me feeling like crap the next day! .... The stella is better out here - probably cause its made a little more authentically and might not have as many 'additives' in it.
my g/f been workin there for last three months so have dodged over there a couple of times. I agree with what you say but really liked the cafe life in the daytime, great food better than france and good beer and totally wonderful chocolate but I didn't have to work so could just enjoy watching the world go by whilst getting slowly plastered. It seems to rain a lot. and everybody is VERY polite, even kids hanging round corners who would be surly or aggressive in england say 'bonjour' and smile. I liked that
Yeah if you do the 'cafe culture' thing its very pleasant indeed .... Bit too much racial separaration though - and way too many drunks and vagrants. The socialism and government control of the country has held it back in my opinion - its a good 10 years behind the rest of europe in IT, which for the capital of europe is quite amazing.
