Where is yhe mainstream dance scene heading?

Interesting to see how things have changed in the past 7-8 years as far as the whole superclub / commercial genre "thing" is concerned (note to the genre trolls - you know the point im making, dont be picky)

Things like gatecrasher arent nights at a certain club anymore, they are merely a marketing umbrella for a certain "type" of clubbing.... Ditto with godskitchen and a whole load of clubs - A while back you associated clubbing with certain venues... now its the name you refer to, and the location itself is becoming less and less important. Even promise is moving out into different locations to run certain nights etc, but to a lesser degree.

Music wise, we've went from a more uptempo house music kind of thing back when i started clubbing in 1997,... all the way to PVD esque hard euphoric trance in 2004 as far as the MAINSTREAM thing is concerned,... now it seems like the harder and harder styles of music are becoming just as, if not more popular (if you looked at the surveys they run in mixmag - a barometer of the masses)

SO..... in five/six years time, what will the non elite, but left of centre crowd be doing????

moaning their tits off "it's not like it used to be"

Fuck knows..... I'll continue playing the music I love and clubbing in the clubs I love. when I start to not enjoy it I give it up, I'm not one for critisism of genres or the other generations of clubbers. If you enjoy it - do it...if you don't fuck off and stop taking the piss out of those who do.

Im hoping for a Prog revival again, i missed the boat last time around when i was more bothered by how many "choons" could be squeezed into a 74 minute gatecrasher cd :spangled:

I'd like trance to move on to a more J00F esque prog/psy/driving sound personally - but thats just my preference of course....

As a mainstreamer myself, im not criticising it, just wondering if things will change in my favour, or will it make a victor meldrew out of me wondering why its not to my tastes any more.....

prog has always been there, looking at night like Bedrock/Turnmills. Prog is alive and well and is becoming the music of choice for more and more main rooms up and down the country.

A welcome return for DJ's like Sander K, Timo Mass, Parks & Wilson, Slacker, Breeder.

Yep - its not back in the mainstream like it was with Promise a few years though - Im not doubting its popularity, or its credibility... just wondering if it will ever be the "in" thing for the widespread crowd again...

I think that techno will boom more over the next year or so and hardhouse will be less popular than it has been this year!

I don't give a toss whats cool and whats not myself, what the "in crowd" listen to or play don't really bother me to be honest. I play what I like and listen to what I like.

Take techno for example, becoming more and more mainstream due to high profile DJ's banging it out. This genre recently has become a new thing in the mainstream, it's become COOL to listen to techno. I have been dancing to techno for 8 years, something else will come along and replace it. No matter how popular techno becomes I will always have a love for it, cool or not I don't care.

If it's prog in clubs you want, hit promise early for Anton or go Bedrock, prog is on the rise again. Just to settle clubland after the bosh of the hard stuff.

If hardhouse gets away from alot of tunes sounding the same it may stay big, at the moment tho alot of hh dj's are spipnning quite a bit of hard techno in their sets for this reason.
I'm sticking to my sound and hopefully I will be big next year:D

theres too many 'nail it' djs and wananbes..... there arent many with an individual sound.. ben stevens is a class dj.. but plays the same as glazzas almost? most harder hoover tracks at the minute sound the same and the tidyier stuff is laughable...

    classics anyone?

Trance will get proggier too...as can easily be seen by recent releases.

Most of the 'pure' trance around at the moment is boring me to death.

the prog scene seems to be more southern, HH & techno very much a booming midlands scene, north seems to be trance. Every sound is still alive and well and out there, you just need to travel to hear it.

I had a dig at a HH DJ called Nice Guy Danny the other day, he was boasting about being able to clear a dancefloor cos he plays SO HARD. I reminded him that clearing a dancefloor is hardly the hallmark of a good DJ. Aparently it's cool to play what they call HARD, I just call TOO FAST.

whatever floats his boad I suppose
