    Which laptop out of these...

I need a new one pretty smartish so which is better out of the Amd and Intel processors?. It is essential that it has 2gb or more ram as i run music apps on there...I wont be using Vista if that helps. 15" screen is about the right size, needs to have 3+ usb ports aswell.

The second one, unless you already have all other software, peripherals etc as 64bit. - although the second one is max'd out with 2GB of RAM, where as the 1st can stretch to *GB

Yeah I saw that one on Dixons just before, looked like the laptop equivalent of a pair of orthapedic shoes but the specs are pretty good...

Problem with Acer is they only offer Vista, tosh do XP downgrade as standard

might be worth checking the model first, see if they offer the downgrade feature OR the drivers online. Even if the drivers are available, putting XP on from scratch can be a ball ache making sure all the features work correctly (hot keys, function keys, powe management, etc)

L300 is probably a good balance - make sure it comes with the XP downgrade - you'll get 2 copies of proper recovery disk - Vista and XP

    cheers, thats all pretty useful

I havent got any 64bit apps so seems a bit pointless going for a 64 bit processor, just wasnt sure which was better out of amd and intel.

    years ago, intel was better.

    then AMD caught up.

Now, Intel pisses all over them again, in my opinion - aslong as it's a decent spec processor

    *awaiting AMD geekery backlash*

I had a nightmare deciding which laptop to get... I settled with an Acer, but after having it for about 3 years and using it all the time its starting to need some work :(

Look into Acer's though they are really good and cheap :D

I would reccomend a 64 bit machine because it means you can upgrade to 4+ GB of RAM if you so wish...which chances are you will as it's muck cheap these days.

Generally, i would say Intel all the way - but out of those 2 I'd say the AMD machine has the better spec (faster RAM, higher max ram) and is more future proofed.

So all music apps on a 64bit OS don't work? Doubt it!

Most people who say 64 bit has loads of issues, haven't actually got a 64 bit OS and just regurgitate stuff from ages ago. Most software is fine, especially modern software. Legacy apps can be problematic....

Whats so special about music apps? I'd suggest Googling for the particular apps and see recent user reports, not ones that date back to Vista Beta 2.

Having said that since the plan is to go to XP... and 64bit XP is gash...stick with 32 bit if Vista is definitely a no go!

But i've had Vista 64 bit since January without a single problem and it's much more stable than my old XP machine. Just disable UAC!
