Why do people describe music as cheese??

This annoys me loads, the way people just instantly hear the name of a tune, or DJ, and go, its crap coz its cheese!!

Please for all of you who use this term, what is cheese?? I know it as the stuff that grows between your toes!! and maybe other areas!!

Also, I thought it was student nights (70s, 80s and pop) that were described as cheese, not promise nights, or the DJs, or the music they play!!

I can understand people using the word cheese to describe Top of The Pop music, but I think a lot of people use it to describe what was once a wicked tune, thats been around a bit, and gone commercial as cheese! Just because its gone commercial, it doesnt make a tune "cheese!" It makes it mainstream, and for some people may be the reason for no longer liking it, but a lot of these tunes had they're place in time, and to immediately hear these tunes now and call it cheese, I reckon, is crap!

What do other people reckon about using "cheese" to describe tunes and DJs? I think it is shit!! Maybe a tune is out dated, or just "not to your taste" but as far as I can see, most trance/techno tunes have a good feel in someone's eyes.

Cheese ='s music which is made to sell - it can be a pop thingy like that pop idol tune, it can be a commercial dance track like 9pm till I come....

But a lot of the bestest dance tunes were designed to sell records (catchy lyrics, catchy hook, melodic formula's that work) look at rank 1 - airwave or pvd - for an angel... Blatant cheese... it doesn't make it shit though - infact I love both tunes.

    well thats my deffanition

Please tell me, how can a DJ be as you so put it "fuckin shit", when his tunes aren't and his mixin isnt either?? are you jealous that hes actually made a fortune doing a job he enjoys???

Its people like that that fuck me right off, alright Jules might not be to your taste but lack of intelligence amongst some seem to thing that yelling out "it fucking shit!!" is a decent responce.

I might not like techno, but I aint gonna just start shoutin "its fucking shit!!" to people who actually might like the stuff!

Cheese is in the eye or the beholder.

    And while I'm at it......

One man's cheese is another man's Leftfield.

    Further more......

A record can only be defined as cheesy or leftfield if a consumer considers the track in the context of all other music currently in the public domain. If you think about it, if there had never been any other records, Will's effort would not be cheesy, it would just be a record. Therefore saying a record is chessy means nothing.

    I'm confused

Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

saw dave pearce on saturday (some would call him the king of cheesey dance music).. he probably played some commercial dance records i recall hearing them and thinking can't remember any names though. However his choice of tunes didn't really bother me, infact i quite enjoyed the night apart from his poor mixing over and over again. :(
