wifi Ok, deal is i'm moving into a house with 5 other mates mid july. I wanna get a wireless network set up asap. We're all gonna chip in and get a 1 mbit line and then split it using a wifi network to save the hassle of using cables and stuff. Basically I need to know what to get, from the knowledge I have now I know i'll need: 6 wifi cards for the PC's 1 broadband connection+modem(high speed) A standalone wifi router+transmitter What else? Any help is much appreciated.
thats all you need. Dont forget to set up WEP security on it - i lazily didnt and came home to find some cahnt using my connection....
Another question: Once i've got all the above set up, will the network behave in exactly the same way as one using rj45 cable? What I mean is will there be a LAN network (i.e being able to share hard drives and cd players and shizx) once it's all setup or will it just be an internet access network?
it won't make any difference - i assume you'll be using xp? once you're connected to the network (it does it in exactly the same way) you'll be able to do the same stuff.
yeah its exactly the same and leverages the same network "look and feel" of a regular network - with the exception of a few new settings for WEP and choosing which network you want to connect to (handy for nicking your next door neighbours unsecured wireless network )
If you have a good brand router (i have a linksys/cisco one) then it will have a nice web interface you can use to just specify a .bin file (or whatever) and hit submit to flash the firmware.... piece of cake. Failing that, you might have to mess around with command line stuff if you have a cheapo router... although most cheap ones have web interfaces these days.
aha! web interfaces everywhere... we're becoming too dependant on them! Eventually techies will become glorified trainers! Machines will design themselves and we will have no knowledge on what to do! they'll take over... machines and shape-shifting lizards. p.s. u decieded about next friday? i've had a bit of a change of heart.... just wondering....
Yeah - the easier it becomes, the harder it is to justify high salaries .... ill check the trainline for tickets, no doubt they will be 100 odd quid but we live in hope - i could do with a night out,... aint been clubbing since Crasher in march
.... damn... only 100 quid train tickets, and i cant drive cause the car is written off and i need to save up for a new one Gutted.. ahh well.. !"£$%^&*( THREAD HIIJACKED - MWHAHAHAHAH _(&^(*^(&*"%*£
my wireless network is at best patchy as fuck... the signal keeps dropping, and occasionally, it's loses it's connection, it claims im connected, but i can't acess the router's setup page, and can't get online. often, the only way to get around this is to go downstairs, reset the router, reset my computer... and that's a right fucking pain in the arse. i've changed the firmware no less than 5 times already... i originally changed the firmware because the newer firmwares added a firewall to the router. the newest one w2as pap, dropping ALL the time, i tried an older one, which managed to disable my wireless altogether :spangled: and now im on the second newest one... it works better... but it still fucking does it. i also can't enable WEP on the router... it just fucking crashes when i try. it's the 'origo awr 7210', btw.
1) i'd say your MAC address on the back of the router is the one to use. 2) Have u registered the MAC with Telewest? After installing new firmware - a hardware reboot is essential i'd say!
which is probably what would happen. a firmware upgrade is flashing the ROM with new data - like setting to the detault settings - so it will need setting back up.
